The world looked away again as evil swept through Nigeria’s Benue State on Friday night. Islamic extremists reportedly murdered as many as 200 Christians in a gruesome overnight massacre, according to a Catholic relief organization on the ground.
It’s being called the deadliest single attack yet in a region already stained with blood from years of religiously motivated violence.
The victims were mostly displaced Christian families, many of them women and children, sheltering inside a makeshift camp in the Yelewata market square. Survivors say the killers stormed the area around 11 p.m., shouting “Allahu Akbar” before setting buildings ablaze and hacking fleeing civilians with machetes.
“They came for us like animals,” said Father Ukuma Jonathan Angbianbee, a parish priest who survived the bloodbath by hiding under furniture. “They poured fuel on the doors, lit the fires, and waited for us to run. Then they started shooting.”
Angbianbee described stepping out into a scene of carnage: “What I saw was truly gruesome. People were slaughtered. Corpses were scattered everywhere.”
Massacre in the Dark: How the Attack Unfolded
Reports from Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) say that at least 500 people were sleeping when the terrorists struck. Initial estimates put the death toll at over 100, but data from the Diocese of Makurdi’s Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace places the number closer to 200 dead—with scores more critically wounded and dozens missing.
Those who tried to escape were either burned alive or butchered with machetes. Police had repelled an earlier assault on St. Joseph’s Church, where over 700 displaced Christians were hiding. But by the time attackers reached the market camp, help never came.
According to local sources, the killers are believed to be radicalized Fulani herdsmen—a group known for their increasing alignment with jihadist ideologies, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State.
A Region Under Siege, A World Silent
The attack is part of a terrifying trend in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where Christian farming villages are under near-daily assault. Just weeks ago, 100 people were killed in Gwer West, and more than 5,000 were displaced. Friday’s slaughter pushes the region into uncharted horror.
Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the atrocity during Sunday’s Angelus, calling it a “terrible massacre” and praying for the “rural Christian communities of Benue State, who have been relentless victims of violence.”
But critics say thoughts and prayers aren’t enough.
“This is a slow-motion genocide,” said Reverend David Ankwu, a human rights advocate based in Abuja. “Christians are being systematically wiped off the map, and global leaders remain mute. Where is the outrage? Where is the action?”
Fulani Extremism: The Hidden Jihad
The Fulani, a vast nomadic group spread across West Africa, number in the millions. While not all Fulani embrace radicalism, a growing faction has reportedly adopted violent Islamist ideologies, mirroring the tactics and theology of groups like ISIS.
A 2023 report from the U.K.’s All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief warned of increasing signs of “ethnic cleansing carried out under the guise of land disputes.”
But in Nigeria, political leaders have struggled to label the crisis for what it is. Many local and international agencies still describe the violence as “communal clashes” rather than targeted religious slaughter—a semantic dodge that critics argue lets radical Islamists off the hook.
According to Global Christian Relief, nearly 10,000 Christians were murdered by Islamist groups in Nigeria between late 2022 and late 2024 alone.
A Cry for Action
Church leaders are pleading for the U.S. and allied nations to intervene—not with boots on the ground, but with pressure on the Nigerian government to crack down on jihadist militias and protect its Christian population.
“This is no longer just Nigeria’s problem,” said Bishop Matthew Garba. “If America still stands for religious freedom, now is the time to act.”
As families bury their dead—some in mass graves—residents of Yelewata and other Christian towns are packing what little they have and fleeing. The goal of the killers is working: the land is being emptied, and churches are being silenced.
In Washington, the State Department has not yet issued a statement on the latest massacre.
But for Nigerian Christians, the message is already clear: they are on their own.

Most of the people in Nazareth/Bethlehem who lived 2,000 years ago when Christ was born and raised were of olive colored skin with black hair ( Beards and Eye-brows dark/brown/black) and had dark brown eyes.
Christ was a Jew. His mother was a Jewess. His father, however, is a glorified eternal God who lives eternally in the Celestial kingdom of worlds. He ( God the Father or Elohim ) was not identified as a Jew in any published scripture.
It has been made known in the Holy Scriptures that Jesus of Nazareth was born a \’ Jew \’ because He would not have otherwise been crucified if as a mortal if He had been born of any other Human Tribe. His mother was earthly but his Father was heavenly and dwells in the Celestial kingdom of Heaven.
If Jesus of Nazareth had been born in any other tribe of humans other than as a JEW (Tribe of Judas ) then He would not have been accepted as the Son of the living God or the Great Redeemer and Holy Messiah and Savior of all mankind.
Note: When Christ the Lord returns to the earth to fulfill His mission in the near future…and when Jesus appears in His majesty and glory at His second coming it will include an appearance at Jerusalem near the Mount of Olives which is located near where the soldiers of Herod once nailed Hm to the cross at Golgotha where He was crucified as His mother Mary watched. After His death and resurrection Jesus ascended into heaven to report to His Father that He had completed His mortal mission of the infinite and eternal atonement for all mankind. The Jews will then ask Jesus this question: \” What are the scars on your hands and feet and side? \”
The Savior will answer: \” These scars that you see on me are from the wounds which I received in the House of My Friends of the Jewish Nation in Jerusalem when I was in my mortal state and was nailed to the cross and crucified between two prisoners who were also crucified. \”
\” I offered myself a sacrifice for sin to afford everyone to have their sins remitted on conditions of repentance if they believe I am the Savior of all mankind.\”
I encourage everyone to read the following scripture written by Jacob the Nephite about 600 B.C. the son of Lehi the prophet from Jerusalen and brother of Nephi. It explains how the atonement of Christ the Jew paid for the sins of all mankind kind on condition they believe in Jesus of Nazareth and repent of their sins. Extremely important for receiving Eternal Life.

Note: If Jesus had been born of any other Tribe of the House of Israel then the people on the earth would have believed that He was, in fact, the Son of God the Father by the power of the Holy Ghost as did the Nephites who believed when the resurrected Christ appeared to them in 3rd Nephi ( Chapters 12-15) of the Book of Mormon.
But the JEWS rejected Jesus and caused His death.
Christ did not look in the flesh like the color of the people born in Sweeden or Norway or Great Britain, or Germany or the Swiss people, etc. He looked like a Jew.
We can conclude for sure from the FACTS available that JESUS CHRIST of Nazareth had to be born a JEW to fulfill His mortal mission to atone for the sins of God\’s children.
His mission will be fulfilled when He comes back to earth as He promised. It appears this momentous event is near at hand because of the SIGNS now manifest. He said the very things would happen that we now see on the news. These are the last days we are witnessing.
