‘Good Morning America’ Host Reveals Death of Her Mom at 85

Lara Spencer is saying goodbye to the woman she called her biggest light.

The Good Morning America favorite revealed that her beloved mom, Carolyn Von Seelen, died on February 13 at the age of 85 — and the heartbreak is still raw.

Spencer, 56, shared the devastating news in an emotional Instagram tribute, writing that her mother passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. But even with loved ones nearby, the loss has left a massive void.

“My smile lit up every room she walked into,” Spencer wrote of her mom, remembering her courage, resilience, endless optimism, deep faith and boundless love. She admitted she’s now facing “overwhelming sadness at the thought” of navigating life without her.

And the grief isn’t just Spencer’s alone.

Her Good Morning America family quickly rallied around her. Co-anchor Robin Roberts shared a touching message, saying that knowing Von Seelen was “knowing pure joy.” Roberts added that she hopes Spencer can find comfort in the countless memories they shared.

The show even paid tribute to Spencer’s mom on-air Tuesday, turning a morning broadcast into a moment of remembrance.

Roberts recalled a sweet surprise that perfectly captured Von Seelen’s spirit. She once showed up unannounced at one of Roberts’ speaking events after spotting it in the local paper.

“She read the local paper and saw I was coming to town and she surprised me,” Roberts said, smiling at the memory.

Michael Strahan said the gesture said everything about where Spencer gets her warmth and spontaneity.

“Knowing who Lara is, it isn’t a surprise that her mom would do something like that,” he added.

For viewers who have watched Spencer light up their mornings for years, the tribute offered a glimpse into the woman who helped shape her — a mother whose joy, faith and fierce love clearly live on through her daughter.
