Congressman’s Wife Dies After Tragic Accident

Indiana Congressman Jim Baird is facing an unimaginable loss.

Danise Baird, his wife of nearly six decades, has died from complications related to injuries she suffered in a car crash earlier this year, the Republican lawmaker’s office confirmed Sunday.

The couple had been hospitalized in January after their vehicle was struck in what President Trump later described as a “bad accident.” At the time, Baird shared that he and his wife had been released from the hospital and were continuing to recover, but few details were made public about the severity of their injuries.

Now, weeks later, tragedy has struck.

In a statement posted to social media, the congressman’s office honored Danise as the heart of their family.

“Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service,” the statement read. “A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

The Bairds’ nearly 60-year marriage was often described by colleagues as a partnership grounded in faith and public service. Danise was frequently by her husband’s side throughout his political career, offering quiet support as he represented Indiana in Congress.

Lawmakers from across the country quickly shared messages of sympathy.

Minnesota Rep. Pete Stauber, Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain, and Florida Rep. Jimmy Patronis were among those urging supporters to pray for the Baird family.

“Please join me in praying for my colleague Rep. Jim Baird and his family during this incredibly difficult time following the loss of his beloved wife, Danise,” one message read.

New York Rep. Elise Stefanik also paid tribute, writing that Danise was often beside the congressman “as he worked so hard in Congress on behalf of his constituents.”

“They are salt of the earth people and Jim and his family have sacrificed so much for our country,” she added.

As tributes pour in, Washington is mourning alongside the Baird family — remembering a woman described as devoted, steadfast, and deeply loved.
