Congress Explodes into Chaos as Senator Physically Confronts Protester (Video)

A routine Senate hearing spiraled into a dramatic confrontation Wednesday when freshman senator and former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy jumped from his seat and physically intervened to help remove a disruptive protester — a moment now spreading rapidly online.

The clash unfolded during a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing on military readiness. Witnesses say the tension in the room was shattered when a man suddenly stood up and began shouting objections to U.S. foreign policy.

The protester was later identified as Brian McGinnis, a Marine Corps veteran who is currently running for U.S. Senate in North Carolina as a Green Party candidate.

As the hearing proceeded, McGinnis interrupted the proceedings by shouting: “America does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel.”

Capitol Police immediately moved in to escort him out. But the situation quickly escalated.

Video from inside the chamber shows officers struggling to remove McGinnis as he resisted. That’s when Sheehy — a decorated combat veteran who served as a Navy SEAL before entering politics — stepped forward to assist.

According to witnesses, the senator helped officers force McGinnis toward the exit as the protester continued fighting removal.

The scuffle intensified at the doorway.

Footage shows McGinnis grabbing the door and wedging his arm into the frame in an apparent attempt to stop officers from removing him. As officers and Sheehy pushed the door closed, a loud cracking sound could be heard in the video.

It remains unclear whether McGinnis suffered a broken arm during the struggle.

In a statement after the incident, Sheehy said he stepped in to prevent the situation from getting worse.

“Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protester from the Armed Services hearing,” Sheehy said. “He was fighting back, so I decided to help deescalate the situation.”

He added that the protester appeared to be seeking a confrontation.

“This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation — and he got one,” the senator said. “I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence.”

U.S. Capitol Police later confirmed the confrontation left several officers injured.

“An unruly man who started to illegally protest during a hearing put everyone in a dangerous position by violently resisting officers’ attempts to remove him,” the department said in a statement.

Police reported that three officers were treated for minor injuries after the altercation.

Authorities say McGinnis also received medical attention after getting his arm stuck in the doorway while resisting removal.

Investigators say the protester now faces multiple criminal charges, including three counts of assault on a police officer and three counts of resisting arrest. He is also charged with crowding, obstructing, and incommoding — a charge commonly used in cases involving unlawful demonstrations inside federal buildings.

Capitol Police emphasized that protests are strictly prohibited inside congressional buildings.

“Demonstrations are not allowed inside the Capitol complex,” the department said. “There are designated areas outside where individuals may legally protest.”

The chaotic moment comes amid heightened tensions in Washington as lawmakers debate U.S. military involvement overseas and America’s role in conflicts in the Middle East.

For many watching online, the dramatic footage of a sitting U.S. senator physically engaging a protester has become the defining image of a hearing that was supposed to focus on military readiness — but instead turned into one of the most explosive Capitol confrontations of the year.
