Couple Married for 70 Years Die Holding Hands After Accident

A Maryland town is grieving the heartbreaking loss of a beloved couple who spent more than seven decades side by side — and, in the end, couldn’t bear to be apart.

Kenneth and Marilyn Oland, married since 1955, died Monday in Baltimore after being seriously injured in a violent crash on Route 15 near Thurmont, Maryland. Kenneth was 90. Marilyn was 88.

Maryland State Police said the couple was traveling in a Ford when another driver struck the front side door after the Olands’ vehicle allegedly failed to yield the right of way. The impact was so severe they were rushed to a Baltimore hospital and placed on life support.

Less than a week later, their loved ones faced the unthinkable decision — and made sure they took that final step together.

Friends told local outlet Fox 5 that Kenneth and Marilyn were taken off life support at the same time, and they died holding hands in their hospital beds.

“I don’t think one could have lasted without the other,” their friend Nancy Echard said. “That’s how tight they were. You always saw them together, no matter where you were.”

The couple’s death sent shockwaves through Thurmont, where they were known as steady, familiar faces — the kind of people who turn a small town into a community.

An employee at the Thurmont Senior Center said the pair had left the center about 15 minutes before the crash. Friends and staff described the loss as personal, not just sad.

“They ate lunch here every day, so we got to see each other almost every day,” Nancy Rice said. “And it’s a big void here. We’re all sad.”

The senior center later posted a tribute calling them “quite a pair,” adding that you rarely saw one without the other — because they “genuinely chose each other every single day.”

The Olands had lived in Thurmont since 1963, and those closest to the town said they weren’t just residents — they were part of its backbone. Community members described them as “true pillars,” the kind of neighbors who show up, pitch in, and make people feel seen.

Their weekly routine even made them minor legends at local restaurants. Thurmont’s Kountry Kitchen shared a tribute online, remembering them as cherished regulars and praising the friendship they built over countless visits.

Kenneth, according to a LinkedIn profile in his name, was a retired businessman and served as chairman of the Thurmont Board of Appeals. Marilyn worked in chiropractic care for 25 years and retired in 2023.

They leave behind three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Their granddaughter, Kristie Hopkins, said their lasting impact isn’t just their long marriage — it’s how they treated people along the way.

“Their legacy is just how to be humans,” she said. “Be humble and kind and graceful to others and help strangers in need.”

And now, the town that watched them walk through life together is left with an image that’s both devastating and strangely beautiful: after 70 years of marriage, Kenneth and Marilyn Oland didn’t just love each other until the end — they held on to each other until the very last moment.
