Michelle Obama Skips Jesse Jackson’s Funeral Sparking More Rumors

Former first lady Michelle Obama was noticeably absent from the funeral service for civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson, even as her husband, former President Barack Obama, joined other prominent Democratic leaders to honor the late activist.

The memorial service was held Friday, March 6, at the House of Hope in Chicago, less than three weeks after Jackson died at the age of 84 on Feb. 17. The emotional ceremony drew major political figures and longtime allies of the civil rights leader, whose decades of activism shaped American politics and the modern Democratic Party.

But one familiar face was missing.

Michelle Obama did not attend the service, leaving Barack Obama to arrive alone as he joined fellow Democratic presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden. Both Clinton and Biden were accompanied by their spouses, Hillary Clinton and Jill Biden, as they paid tribute to the influential reverend.

The entrance of the three presidents drew loud applause from the crowd.

“Put your hands together for the three presidents — President Bill Clinton, President Joe Biden, and the South Side’s own, President Barack Obama,” the event’s emcee announced as the leaders took their seats.

Barack Obama, who has long credited Jackson as an early influence on his political career, later delivered one of the ceremony’s most anticipated eulogies. The former president reflected on Jackson’s impact on the civil rights movement and American politics while addressing a crowd that included politicians, activists, clergy members, and longtime supporters.

At one point during his remarks, Obama appeared to take a subtle swipe at current President Donald Trump.

The moment came after members of the audience began cheering and calling for Obama to run again for the presidency.

“Four more years!” several attendees shouted.

Obama quickly shut down the idea with a grin.

“Nah,” he responded. “See, I believe in the Constitution.”

The line drew laughter and applause from the crowd. The comment was widely interpreted as a dig at Trump, who has repeatedly teased the possibility of seeking a third presidential term despite constitutional limits.

While Obama commanded the stage during the memorial, attention quickly shifted online to Michelle Obama’s absence.

The former first lady has faced growing criticism over the past year for skipping several major political and ceremonial events alongside her husband.

In January 2025, Michelle drew backlash for not attending the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. Later that same month, she also declined to attend President Trump’s second inauguration, sparking fresh speculation about her reduced public appearances.

The criticism intensified on social media after Friday’s funeral, with some observers questioning why she skipped another major gathering involving prominent political figures.

Michelle Obama has previously addressed the controversy surrounding her decisions to step back from certain events.

Speaking on an episode of her podcast, “IMO,” she explained that she has been learning to prioritize personal boundaries — something she said many women struggle to do.

“It took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but do the thing that was right for me,” she said. “That was a hard thing for me to do.”

Obama described her approach as learning “the art of saying no.”

“It’s a muscle that you have to build,” she explained. “And I think we started building that muscle late in life.”

The former first lady also said she hopes her daughters — and young women watching — learn earlier how to set boundaries.

“I want our daughters, and young women out there, to start practicing different strategies for saying no,” she said.

Still, her absence from Jackson’s funeral is likely to fuel continued discussion about her public role and how frequently she plans to appear at major political events in the future.

For now, Barack Obama continues to represent the family at major gatherings — even as questions grow about Michelle Obama’s increasingly selective schedule.

  1. Michelle Obama is an entitled racist anti-American pig . Who cares what this ungrateful pig thinks or does . American taxpayers pay for her to attend the best universities by way of affirmative action and she pays American taxpayer back by telling us that she was never proud of United States until her husband was elected president. I will also never forget the time she was at a meeting of Western leaders in her and Brock, walking behind the European leaders and their wives and their wives roll thin And feminine, and she looked at them with disgust and jealousy.
