Random Daylight Stabbing in San Francisco’s Chinatown Caught on Camera

A shocking act of violence unfolded in broad daylight in San Francisco’s Chinatown this week when a man was stabbed from behind in what authorities say appears to have been a completely random attack.

Surveillance footage circulating online shows the disturbing moment a hooded suspect calmly walks up behind an unsuspecting pedestrian and plunges a knife into his back without warning.

The attack happened shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday near the busy intersection of Stockton and Sacramento streets — an area typically filled with shoppers, tourists and workers moving through the historic neighborhood.

Authorities say the victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, was standing near a crosswalk when the suspect approached from behind.

The video shows the attacker pulling out a knife and driving it into the victim’s lower back before casually walking away.

There was no visible argument or confrontation beforehand.

Police say the suspect simply crossed the street and disappeared from view moments after the stabbing.

The victim, visibly stunned, turned around and clutched his back as he struggled to remain standing. Within seconds, he stumbled and collapsed onto the sidewalk.

Witnesses in the area appeared shocked by what had just happened. One bystander was seen pulling out a phone, likely calling for emergency assistance.

First responders arrived shortly afterward and found the man suffering from a severe stab wound. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in life-threatening condition.

San Francisco police quickly launched a search for the suspect based on witness descriptions.

Investigators later located a man matching that description near the 600 block of Powell Street, several blocks from the crime scene. Officers detained the individual without incident and took him into custody.

Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name, possible charges, or any information about what may have motivated the violent attack.

“We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident,” a police spokesperson told local media. “At this time, the motive remains unclear.”

The brazen stabbing has raised new concerns about public safety in parts of San Francisco, particularly after another violent confrontation involving the mayor’s security team reportedly took place the same day in the city’s troubled Tenderloin district.

For residents and business owners in Chinatown, the random nature of the attack is especially unsettling.

“This is supposed to be one of the busiest and safest parts of the city during the day,” one local shop owner told reporters. “To see something like this happen in the middle of the afternoon is frightening.”

Police say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives review surveillance footage and gather additional witness statements.
