A Georgia community is reeling after a violent fight between middle school students was captured on video — and ended in tragedy days later.
Twelve-year-old Jada West died Sunday after suffering seizures and cardiac arrest following a brutal altercation that unfolded when students stepped off a school bus in Villa Rica, a suburb west of Atlanta.
The disturbing fight happened on March 5 and quickly spread across social media after relatives shared footage of the moment the confrontation turned violent.
Family members say Jada had recently transferred schools and had been dealing with bullying in the weeks leading up to the incident.
What began as a heated argument between students escalated into a physical fight in front of dozens of children gathered near the bus stop.
In the video, a group of middle schoolers can be seen arguing loudly before two girls suddenly begin fighting. Within seconds, the chaos intensifies.
One of the girls is slammed hard onto the pavement, and a loud thud can be heard in the footage as shocked students scream in the background.
Some children shout for the fight to continue. Others beg the girls to stop.
Jada eventually manages to get up and walk away from the scene. But what happened next would shock her family.
According to relatives, she collapsed shortly afterward.
“Before my niece could even make it home, her heart stopped,” Jada’s aunt, Dequala McClendon, wrote in a heartbreaking message posted to Facebook.
Family members rushed to the scene.
“When I got there, she was on the ground,” McClendon told local reporters. “She wasn’t breathing.”
Jada was rushed to the hospital, where doctors fought to save her life. Over the following days, she reportedly suffered multiple seizures and eventually went into cardiac arrest.
She died Sunday.
Her sudden death has sparked outrage and grief across the Douglas County community.
Police confirmed the fight involved two students who attend Mason Creek Middle School. Investigators are now reviewing video from the incident as they work to determine exactly what happened.
So far, authorities say no charges have been filed.
Officials from the Villa Rica Police Department said they are working alongside the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues.
Family members have raised questions about how the situation escalated and whether it could have been prevented.
Relatives told local media the argument reportedly started earlier on campus before continuing on the bus ride home and finally exploding at the bus stop.
They also questioned why the other student involved in the fight was allowed on the bus route if she did not live in the neighborhood.
The school district released a statement expressing sorrow over Jada’s death.
“The Douglas County School System is deeply saddened by the passing of a student at Mason Creek Middle School,” the statement said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
School officials emphasized that the altercation did not occur on school grounds or during school hours.
“This incident did not occur on school property or during school hours, and there is nothing to indicate that this is related to any on-campus activity,” the district said. “The matter is under the jurisdiction of the Villa Rica Police Department.”
But Jada’s family says the answers offered so far are not enough.
“My niece is not here anymore,” McClendon told reporters. “She was lying in the hospital with a tube in her throat while the other kids went back to school like nothing happened.”
For now, investigators are awaiting the results of Jada’s autopsy, which will determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the viral video continues circulating online — serving as a painful reminder of the fight that ended with a young life cut short.
