Quadruple Amputee ‘Cornhole Champ’ Accused of Murder

A Maryland man once celebrated as a top cornhole champion is now at the center of a chilling murder case that has stunned his community.

Dayton James Webber, 27 — a quadruple amputee athlete who rose to prominence in competitive cornhole — has been hit with multiple murder charges after authorities say he shot and killed a man during a late-night argument inside a vehicle.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the alleged violence unfolded Sunday in La Plata, Maryland. Investigators say Webber fatally shot 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells, who was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time.

What happened next only deepened the horror.

Officials say Wells’ body was later discovered in a yard in nearby Charlotte Hall. Two other passengers, who were sitting in the back seat, reportedly witnessed the shooting — and told police Webber asked them to help dispose of the body. They refused, got out of the vehicle, and flagged down officers to report what happened.

The shooting was reported just before 10:30 p.m. Nearly two hours later, authorities received another call about a body found in a yard — leading them to Wells.

Webber allegedly fled the state, sparking a manhunt that ended across state lines.

Police in Virginia tracked his vehicle to a gas station in Charlottesville. He was later found at a nearby hospital seeking treatment for an unspecified medical issue. Officers arrested him upon his release, and he is now being held as a fugitive from justice while awaiting extradition back to Maryland.

Once returned, Webber is expected to face charges including first-degree murder and second-degree murder.

Authorities noted that everyone involved knew each other, though the exact motive behind the deadly confrontation remains under investigation.

The case has drawn national attention in part because of Webber’s unique story. Featured by ESPN in 2023, he had built a reputation as one of Maryland’s top cornhole players, even competing in the American Cornhole League World Championships.

In that profile, Webber described cornhole as his “calling.” He became a quadruple amputee as an infant after a severe bacterial infection led to sepsis.

Now, that once-inspiring story has taken a dark and disturbing turn.

The American Cornhole League acknowledged the situation in a statement, calling it “an extremely serious matter” and offering condolences to the victim’s family.

Investigators say the case remains active, and it is unclear whether Webber has retained an attorney.
