A Secret Service agent assigned to Jill Biden’s security detail accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday morning in what officials described as a “negligent discharge” at Philadelphia International Airport.
According to officials, the former first lady was nowhere near the incident when the gun went off. The agent suffered what authorities said was a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The Secret Service later confirmed the shooting happened while the agent was handling his service weapon during a protective assignment. No one else was hurt, and officials said there was no broader threat tied to the incident.
Philadelphia police said emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the wounded agent to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Authorities also noted the shooting did not disrupt airport operations, even as the area was secured for an investigation.
The Secret Service says its Office of Professional Responsibility will now review exactly what happened.
The episode is likely to raise fresh questions about training, weapon handling, and professionalism inside one of the country’s most elite federal protection agencies. For an agency tasked with guarding top political figures, even one careless mistake can quickly become a major embarrassment.
Officials have not released the agent’s identity, and the investigation remains ongoing.
