Holy Week Outrage After Israel Stops Priests from Praying at Sacred Church

A stunning Holy Week controversy erupted in Jerusalem after Israeli police blocked some of the Catholic Church’s top officials from entering one of Christianity’s holiest sites for private Palm Sunday prayers — prompting a sharp rebuke from U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee and triggering outrage far beyond Israel’s borders.

The extraordinary incident unfolded at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the ancient Jerusalem church revered by Christians around the world as the place where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected. For centuries, church leaders have marked Palm Sunday there without interruption. But this year, that tradition was abruptly broken.

Catholic officials said Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Father Francesco Ielpo, and two other priests were on their way to the church early Sunday for a private prayer visit when Israeli police stopped them from entering.

That came after church leaders had already been informed they would not be permitted to hold Palm Sunday Mass at the sacred site because of security concerns tied to the ongoing war and fears over Iranian missile attacks.

The decision immediately ignited fury, especially because the clergy were not attempting to hold a massive public gathering. They were simply trying to carry out a private religious observance during one of the most important weeks on the Christian calendar.

Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel and a longtime outspoken Christian conservative, did not hold back.

He said it may be understandable for authorities to limit large gatherings during a time of heightened danger, but stopping four priests from entering the church for a private blessing was a step too far.

In a public statement on X, Huckabee blasted the move as “an unfortunate overreach” that was already causing major repercussions around the world.

He also pointed out that the planned visit appeared to fall within Israel’s own Home Front Command guidelines, which reportedly allowed gatherings of up to 50 people.

For many Christians, that made the decision even harder to explain.

Huckabee said barring the Patriarch from entering the church on Palm Sunday for a private ceremony was difficult to justify, while adding that Israeli officials had indicated they would work with church leaders to find a safe way to carry out Holy Week events.

Israeli police defended the restrictions by citing the unique dangers of Jerusalem’s Old City, where narrow streets and dense crowds can create major challenges for emergency responders.

Authorities said the holy sites area is especially difficult to access with large rescue vehicles and warned that any major gathering there could become dangerous in the event of a mass casualty incident.

Still, the move set off a firestorm.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office reportedly said police would meet with Cardinal Pizzaballa to try to reach a compromise. Netanyahu’s office insisted there was “no malicious intent whatsoever” behind the decision and noted that an Iranian missile fragment had landed at the church in recent days.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog also reached out personally to Pizzaballa after the incident, offering an apology and expressing what he called his “great sorrow” over what had happened.

Herzog said the situation stemmed from urgent security concerns tied to the continuing threat of missile attacks from Iran, which has launched retaliatory strikes against Israel in recent days. He noted that missiles had already fallen in or near Jerusalem’s Old City.

But the apology did little to calm the uproar.

The Patriarchate and the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land issued a blistering statement condemning the decision, saying it marked the first time in centuries that the heads of the Catholic Church had been prevented from observing Palm Sunday at the Holy Sepulchre.

They called the incident a “grave precedent” and warned that it had deeply offended Christians across the globe during one of the holiest weeks of the year.

The church groups also described the police action as “manifestly unreasonable” and “grossly disproportionate,” language that underscored just how serious they viewed the matter.

The fallout quickly spread beyond Jerusalem. Italy’s foreign ministry reportedly summoned Israel’s ambassador to Rome to discuss the incident, signaling that what began as a security dispute at a church door had now become an international diplomatic problem.

Meanwhile, worshipers were forced to gather elsewhere, including at the Monastery of Saint Saviour in East Jerusalem, after the Holy Sepulchre was closed off.

For millions of Christians watching from around the world, the image was jarring: senior clergy blocked from one of the faith’s most sacred places on Palm Sunday, as war fears and political tensions collided with religious tradition in the heart of Jerusalem.

And for Huckabee and many other believers, the question remains simple — how did a private Palm Sunday prayer at the site of Christ’s tomb become something the authorities thought they had to stop?

  1. What is wrong with people??? Missiles have been dropped in Jerusalem and god forbid a missile would hit the holy sites!!!! Israel isn’t doing this out of spite, in fact, if it wasn’t for Israel existing, Christians would have NO access to jerusalem!! How quickly they forget how the Muslims turned Jerusalem and the wall into a garbage dump and forbade jews and Christians from going anywhere near the holy sites, Even to this day, Christians are not allowed to walk the 12 stations of the cross because Arabs control the old city of that path that Jesus walked. They should be thanking Israel for putting their lives on the line to protect ALL Israeli’s, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Druze and all Catholics.
