Shocking Twist in Charlie Kirk Murder Case

New court filings are pouring cold water on the latest wave of online speculation surrounding the assassination of conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk.

Prosecutors revealed Tuesday that the bullet fragment recovered from Kirk’s body was too damaged for investigators to definitively match it to the rifle Tyler Robinson is accused of using — but they also made clear that this does not prove the fatal shot came from some other weapon.

That key detail has become the center of a growing storm after claims spread that the fragment didn’t match Robinson’s .30-06 hunting rifle, fueling fresh conspiracy theories about the shocking killing that rocked conservatives across the country.

But according to court papers, the truth appears to be more complicated.

The fragment recovered during Kirk’s autopsy was examined against the alleged murder weapon found at the scene, and prosecutors say the comparison came back “inconclusive.” In plain terms, investigators could not make a firm match because the bullet was too badly damaged to show enough detail.

That does not mean it was a mismatch.

It also does not mean the bullet came from another gun.

Utah County Attorney’s Office spokesman Christopher Ballard said an inconclusive bullet fragment analysis simply means examiners did not have enough usable markings to determine whether it was fired by a particular weapon.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the testing, though the full report has not yet been publicly released and has so far only been referenced in court filings.

Meanwhile, the FBI is still conducting its own ballistic analysis, according to papers filed Friday by Robinson’s defense team.

Robinson’s attorneys are now trying to delay a May 18 hearing, arguing they need more time to review the pending FBI results as well as additional evidence from prosecutors. They also hinted they may try to use the ATF’s inconclusive finding as part of their defense.

“The defense may very well decide to offer the testimony of the ATF firearm analyst as exculpatory evidence,” Robinson’s lawyers wrote, adding that they still need access to the agency’s case file and testing protocols before making that decision.

Robinson, 22, is accused of gunning down Kirk, the outspoken Turning Point USA co-founder, during a September 10, 2025 event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Kirk was just 31 years old when he was killed in front of a crowd of thousands in a brazen attack that sent shockwaves through the conservative movement.

Authorities say a scoped Mauser bolt-action rifle was recovered near the scene.

Robinson remains behind bars and could face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder.

He is scheduled to return to court on April 17, when his legal team is expected to argue that cameras and press photography should be barred from hearings and the eventual trial.

For now, the biggest takeaway is this: despite the online frenzy, prosecutors are making it clear that the inconclusive bullet test is not the bombshell some were hoping for. But with the FBI still analyzing the evidence, this high-profile case could take another dramatic turn at any moment.
