Two climbers are being hailed as walking miracles after surviving nearly three days trapped on a treacherous mountainside in Fiordland National Park, battling brutal weather that nearly cost them their lives.
The terrifying ordeal unfolded near Sabre Peak, where the pair became stranded Wednesday afternoon after conditions rapidly turned dangerous. Officials say a distress signal was first triggered around 4:30 p.m. when one of the climbers activated a personal locator beacon — a move that likely saved both their lives.
But what followed was a nightmare.
Relentless rain, thick cloud cover, and violent alpine conditions repeatedly grounded rescue helicopters, leaving the climbers stuck on a steep, unstable mountainside with no way out. Desperate and exposed, one of the men managed to send chilling SOS satellite text messages to his brother, confirming the situation was dire.
Despite being experienced climbers, they were completely immobilized by the extreme conditions.
Rescuers tried again and again to reach them — and failed.
For three long nights, the pair huddled inside a tiny two-person bivvy, their sleeping bags drenched as freezing rain battered the mountainside. Food supplies ran out. Hope began to fade.
“They believed they would not have survived another night,” a search and rescue official revealed.
Finally, just after sunrise Friday, a narrow window of opportunity opened.
A helicopter crew pushed into the dangerous terrain and successfully spotted the climbers. In a dramatic high-risk maneuver, rescuers executed a 100-foot long-line extraction — pulling the stranded men to safety from the sheer mountainside.
A doctor onboard immediately assessed the pair before they were flown to nearby Te Anau for further treatment.
Authorities say their survival is nothing short of astonishing.
Officials are now warning adventurers not to underestimate the wild — urging hikers and climbers to always carry emergency beacons, communicate their plans, and prepare for the worst.
Because in places like Fiordland, nature doesn’t give second chances.
