In a shocking and brutal incident on election night, Corey Burke, a program manager at Blue Origin, allegedly killed her father in their Seattle home, claiming the act was a form of “liberation.” Court documents describe a bloody scene where Burke, 33, reportedly attacked her 67-year-old father, Timothy Burke, with an ice ax after an argument. Police say they found Burke “smiling and clapping,” her face and clothes covered in blood.
According to charging documents, the confrontation began over a minor disagreement about keeping the lights off in the $800,000 house they shared. This argument escalated into a violent altercation in which Burke allegedly strangled, bit, and hacked her father with an ice ax. She reportedly told police that she viewed the killing as a way to “help people change their attachment to their parents” and claimed it “had to happen today.”
Burke, a five-year employee of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and a manager in the space company’s training programs, has been married to Samantha Leigh Allen, a prominent transgender writer and editor, according to public records and her LinkedIn profile. Allen is known for her work at Them, a Conde Nast publication focused on transgender issues, and for her acclaimed book, Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States.
Witnesses told authorities that Burke had become increasingly upset with the election and believed that Donald Trump would easily defeat Vice President Kamala Harris. Police reports suggest the election outcome may have triggered her violent breakdown. “She seemed overwhelmed by Trump’s election victory,” an officer stated in the affidavit.
The court documents reveal harrowing details: after retrieving an ice ax from upstairs, Burke allegedly tripped her father, choked him, and struck him repeatedly. She then reportedly sat next to him as he lay dying, before smashing the home’s windows as part of what she described as a “liberation ritual.” When police arrived, they encountered Burke clapping and appearing “happy,” while the shattered windows created a chaotic scene around the house.
At the time of her arrest, Burke seemed disoriented, unable to explain the blood covering her, and at first, denied knowing what had happened to the windows. Eventually, she whispered, “I killed him” to one of the responding officers, the charging documents state.
Court filings also indicate that Burke told investigators she had a “strained” relationship with her father, marked by blurred boundaries that left her feeling “hyperfocused and disorganized.” The election results, she claimed, had been the final straw.
Burke has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held on $2 million bail.
