Trump Promises Mass Pardons After Hunter Biden Shocker

In a stunning turn of events, President-elect Donald Trump hinted at mass pardons for the January 6 Capitol riot defendants just hours after President Joe Biden issued a sweeping pardon for his embattled son, Hunter Biden. The pardon, which covers offenses from 2014 to 2024, has ignited a firestorm of political outrage and legal debate.

Taking to Truth Social late Sunday, Trump questioned the fairness of Hunter Biden’s pardon, calling it a “miscarriage of justice.” He wrote, “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!”

The 45th president, who reclaimed the White House in a decisive November victory, previously suggested during his campaign that he would consider pardoning the more than 1,500 individuals prosecuted for the Capitol breach. The riot occurred as Congress was certifying Biden’s 2020 election win—a moment that remains deeply divisive in American history.

Trump Team Slams DOJ

In a separate statement, Trump’s transition team blasted the Department of Justice, pledging to “fix” what it labeled a corrupt and weaponized federal system. “The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,” spokesperson Steven Cheung said. “That system of justice must be fixed and due process must be restored for all Americans.”

The statement, notably, did not mention Biden’s pardon of his son. However, Trump’s fiery rhetoric and his transition team’s pledge suggest a sweeping overhaul of federal agencies once he takes office.

Hunter Biden’s Legal Woes

The pardon for Hunter Biden, 54, comes as he faced sentencing this month on federal gun and tax evasion charges. In September, he pleaded guilty to evading $1.4 million in taxes. Earlier this year, he was convicted on gun charges for possessing a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine.

President Biden, 82, defended his decision in an emotional Sunday night statement, claiming his son was unfairly targeted. “There has been an effort to break Hunter… In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me — and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”

This marks a dramatic reversal from Biden’s June statement at the G7 summit, where he emphatically told reporters, “I will not pardon him.”

Political Fallout

Republicans quickly denounced Biden’s move. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) expressed dismay on social media, writing, “I’m shocked Pres Biden pardoned his son Hunter bc he said many many times he wouldn’t & I believed him. Shame on me.”

The pardon also fueled ongoing Republican-led investigations into alleged Biden family corruption. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) accused the president of blatant hypocrisy. “Joe Biden has lied from start to finish about his family’s corrupt influence peddling activities,” Comer said in a statement. “This pardon is just another effort to cover up decades of wrongdoing.”

Comer’s committee claims to have uncovered evidence of a Biden family “influence-peddling racket” spanning years, with allegations of financial impropriety tied to foreign business dealings.

Trump’s Next Moves

Trump’s suggestion of pardons for January 6 defendants comes amid renewed scrutiny of his own role in the Capitol riots. The former president has repeatedly described the prosecutions of the rioters as politically motivated, portraying the individuals as victims of a biased system.

With his return to the White House imminent, Trump’s remarks signal a potential overhaul of the Justice Department and a controversial path forward that could reshape the nation’s legal and political landscape.

The stage is set for what promises to be a tumultuous presidential term, with both Biden and Trump entrenched in battles over justice, accountability, and the future of American democracy.

  2. Hunter\’s pardons were being considered before Biden pardoned his son\’s crimes.  January 6 convictions were for \’trespass at the Capitol Building\’, and could be construed as bogus because the Capitol Building and all in it, including the salaries paid to Congressmembers belong to all American taxpayers, therefore \’walking on one\’s own property is not trespassing\’!
