In a dramatic pre-dawn incident, Secret Service agents fired at suspected carjackers attempting to break into vehicles near Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s Washington, D.C., residence. The confrontation occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in the affluent Northwest neighborhood where Yellen resides.
According to officials, the suspects were attempting to breach vehicles when they encountered the armed agents, prompting the shots. While no one was injured in the exchange, the suspects managed to flee the scene in their own vehicle. Authorities are still searching for the individuals involved.
Investigation Underway
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation, with oversight from U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves’ office. The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting senior government officials, has not yet released a statement.
The high-profile nature of the incident underscores the ongoing crime challenges in the nation’s capital, even in neighborhoods housing prominent government figures.
An Alarming Trend
Carjackings have surged across major cities, including Washington, D.C., making them a growing concern for law enforcement. Treasury Secretary Yellen, a key member of President Biden’s cabinet, is among several officials who have seen increased security measures as threats and urban crime persist.
The brazen attempt occurred in a neighborhood known for its quiet streets and tight security. It highlights the audacity of such criminal acts, even in areas under heavy surveillance.
Heightened Security Concerns
While details remain sparse, the Secret Service’s swift response avoided potential harm to residents and officials. However, the incident raises questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.
More updates are expected as the investigation unfolds. Residents and officials alike are left on edge, a stark reminder that no area is entirely immune to the rising wave of crime gripping American cities.

Carjacking? Anywhere else that would be attempted theft or burglary of a motor vehicle. (There was one of those on my street last week, and it showed up on police report and spotcrime.com as a burglary.) No one was in the car being broken into. Here in Houston, that would go on the books, but chances of an investigation would be slim. And, if a homeowner fired shots at the would-be thieves, our extreme left police and DA would be arresting the shooter.
But the one here wasn’t in the neighborhood of an incompetent administration official.
