In a stunning political maneuver, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly working behind the scenes to thwart Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for a top committee position. The 84-year-old Democratic powerbroker is actively campaigning against AOC’s aspirations to become ranking member on the House Oversight Committee.

Pelosi’s preference? Rep. Gerry Connolly, a 74-year-old Virginia Democrat. Sources say Pelosi is “making calls” to rally support for Connolly over the 35-year-old progressive firebrand from New York.
“I have supported Mr. Connolly for that, should it be open,” Pelosi told Politico last week, publicly backing the veteran lawmaker.
The race to replace current ranking member Jamie Raskin is heating up. AOC has reportedly garnered support from most Democrats on the panel. But Pelosi’s intervention could tip the scales.
Surprisingly, AOC has found an unlikely ally in Republican Committee Chairman James Comer. “I’m a big AOC fan,” Comer told CNN. “Obviously, I don’t agree with very much of her policy, but I think she’s a good person.”
Comer added, “I think AOC would be great,” while diplomatically noting Connolly would “be great” too.
The Democratic Steering and Policy Committee will meet next week to make a recommendation. Their decision could shape the party’s approach to oversight of the incoming Trump administration.
Pelosi’s office has not responded to requests for comment. The former Speaker’s move highlights the ongoing tension between establishment Democrats and the party’s progressive wing.
As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are on the Democratic caucus. Will they embrace generational change or stick with experience? The answer could reshape the party’s future.
