The Wisconsin school shooting that left two dead and six injured has taken a darker turn with revelations about the alleged co-conspirator, Alexander Paffendorf. Neighbors of the 20-year-old have described him as “very creepy” and “quiet,” painting a chilling picture of a reclusive individual who may have been plotting a coordinated attack.
An ex-neighbor from San Diego, where Paffendorf lived with his parents, told TMZ, “He looks like someone who would shoot up a place.” She added, “I never heard him speak a word in six years.” The neighbor recalled unsettling encounters, including Paffendorf following her closely down the stairs and lurking outside her window. Confronting his parents about the behavior, she said, led nowhere.
“He was very disconnected, in his own world,” she said.
Quiet in the Shadows
Current neighbors in Carlsbad, California, echoed similar sentiments. “I’ve only seen him a few times,” said Alex Gallegos. “He’s real quiet. Just walks to his car and back. Says hello, that’s about it.”
These eerie descriptions come as authorities revealed that Paffendorf was allegedly planning a mass shooting at a government building in coordination with 15-year-old Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow. Rupnow carried out the attack at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, killing a substitute teacher and a freshman before turning the gun on herself.
A Chilling Plan
According to an emergency gun violence restraining order, Paffendorf admitted to FBI agents that he and Rupnow had exchanged messages about carrying out simultaneous attacks. “He told Rupnow he would arm himself with explosives and a gun and target a government building,” the restraining order stated.
The document did not specify which government building was targeted or reveal the full extent of their conversations.
California’s red flag gun law allowed a San Diego Superior Court judge to approve the restraining order late Tuesday. The order mandates that Paffendorf surrender all firearms and ammunition within 48 hours.
Unanswered Questions
Four days after the deadly school shooting, investigators remain tight-lipped about a possible motive. The tragedy has left a community reeling and searching for answers.
Paffendorf has not been charged with a crime, but a court hearing on the restraining order is scheduled for January 3. Meanwhile, the families of the victims—substitute teacher Erin West and freshman Rubi Vergara—continue to mourn their loss, as the nation grapples with the harrowing details of a plot that could have been even more catastrophic.
This unfolding story highlights the growing concerns about identifying and addressing potential threats before they turn deadly.
