Federal authorities have launched an investigation into Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier over potential involvement in an illegal sports betting scheme, according to sources familiar with the case. The probe centers on a March 23, 2023, game when Rozier, then with the Charlotte Hornets, exited early with a reported foot injury.
This revelation comes on the heels of former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter’s lifetime NBA ban for manipulating game participation to influence betting outcomes. Porter pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy, exposing a growing scandal within professional basketball. Now, investigators are looking into whether Rozier was involved in a similar scheme.
Rozier, 30, has not been formally charged or accused of any crime. However, federal investigators are scrutinizing betting patterns surrounding the game in question. Unusual wagering activity suggested that insiders may have known in advance about Rozier’s early exit. One bettor even boasted online about receiving “inside info” that Rozier would leave the game early, ensuring his “under” bets would cash out.
NBA spokesman Mike Bass confirmed that the league was aware of the situation.
“In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans,” Bass stated. “The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”
Rozier, who signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension in 2022, was a key player for the Hornets, averaging 23.2 points per game before being traded to Miami. His performance has since dropped significantly, averaging just 12.1 points per game this season.
As sports gambling continues to expand across the country, concerns about its impact on professional sports are escalating. Longtime basketball analyst and former player Charles Barkley has repeatedly warned about the influence of betting on the integrity of the game.
“This is exactly what I was afraid of,” Barkley said in a recent interview. “When you mix big money with young players, temptation creeps in. The league needs to get ahead of this before it spirals out of control.”
With the NBA already reeling from Porter’s scandal, Rozier’s case could further erode public trust in the sport. If authorities uncover evidence of wrongdoing, the fallout could be severe, both for Rozier and the league. For now, all eyes remain on the federal investigation as the Heat guard continues playing under a cloud of suspicion.
