Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is sounding the alarm on what he calls the Democratic Party’s “toxic” image, warning that its approach of “shaming and scolding” voters has driven many Americans away—especially men.
In a revealing interview on the “Somebody’s Gotta Win” podcast, Fetterman admitted that Democrats have struggled to connect with everyday Americans. He bluntly stated that his party’s messaging has alienated potential supporters by talking down to them and labeling them as “ignorant” or worse.
Party of Condescension?
Fetterman minced no words when criticizing his party’s tactics.
“Their primary currency was shaming and scolding—talking down to people, saying, ‘I know better than you. You’re a dope. You’re a bro. You’re ignorant. How can you be this dumb?’ And then, by the way, they’re fascists. How can you vote for that?’” Fetterman said.
He warned that this approach is politically self-destructive, particularly in battleground states like Pennsylvania.
“I love people who voted for Trump. They’re not fascists. They don’t support insurrection,” Fetterman added. “But when Democrats go extreme, treating working-class Americans as a ‘boutique’ concern, they lose the argument. And we have done that.”
A Party Losing Its Men
The Pennsylvania senator was especially blunt about Democrats’ struggles with male voters, acknowledging that the party has lost ground with them for years.
“It’s undeniable that Democrats have lost a lot of men,” he admitted. “In private conversations, many people tell me they feel like men are being blamed for everything—like masculinity itself is a problem. If you don’t conform to an increasingly rigid standard of what progressives think is ‘appropriate,’ you’re cast out. Well, guess what? Those voters left. And that’s absolutely true.”
Fetterman pointed out that the 2024 election was not about intricate policy debates but about voters defending their vision of America. “People voted for who they thought would protect their way of life,” he said.
Border Crisis and Party Denial
Fetterman has also called out his party’s failure to address major concerns such as border security.
“One area where we kind of lost ourselves was the border,” he said in a post-election interview on Fox News. “I’ve been saying for months: We can be pro-immigration and still demand a secure border. But when Democrats act like there’s no crisis, when we tell people to ignore what they see with their own eyes, we lose. And we lose 100%.”
Fetterman’s rare candor has drawn mixed reactions from his party, with some viewing him as a much-needed voice of reason and others frustrated with his willingness to air grievances publicly. But to voters frustrated with the Democratic establishment, his words may ring true.
Is There a Path Back?
The senator remains unsure if Democrats can reverse the damage. “Once you turn your back on a demographic, it’s tough to win them back,” he said. “The shift has been happening for years. I don’t know if we can fix it.”
As Democrats debate their future, Fetterman’s warning is clear: If they keep shaming voters instead of listening to them, they’ll keep losing elections.
