A dramatic rescue effort saved professional surfer Makai McNamara’s life after a harrowing wipeout on Oahu’s North Shore left him unconscious and fighting for survival. The terrifying incident occurred at Pipeline, a notorious surf break known for its extreme danger.
Makai’s brother, fellow pro surfer Landon McNamara, took to Instagram to share the shocking details, expressing gratitude to everyone involved in bringing Makai back to safety. He thanked the lifeguards, surfers, and medical personnel who helped his brother after the near-fatal wipeout, saying they “saved his life.”
Following the incident, Makai was placed in an induced coma for 72 hours to aid his recovery. Landon described the terrifying moment of seeing his brother submerged and unable to surface after the wipeout, expressing feelings of helplessness. “I’m here wishing I did more and got to him faster,” he wrote. “But I know he was in good hands, and I just tried to be there how I could.”
Lifeguards were the first to reach Makai, performing life-saving techniques that brought “life back in his eyes,” according to Landon. Miraculously, Makai was able to speak briefly after regaining consciousness, his brother describing the emotions as overwhelming.
Makai had been competing at Pipeline when the accident occurred, getting knocked off his board and submerged for nearly two minutes. His friend and fellow surfer, Eli Olson, was quick to respond. Olson explained the freak accident, calling it a “bad wave” that forced Makai head-first into the reef. Olson provided life-saving breaths and chest compressions before trained responders arrived on the scene. “It was heavy,” Olson said, reflecting on the intense situation and his friend’s struggle to hold on to life.
Makai’s father, Liam, reassured supporters, saying his son is drawing strength from the outpouring of positive energy around him. “Makai’s a strong young man, and he’s going to get through this,” Liam said.
Known for his big-wave prowess, Makai has competed in some of the world’s biggest surfing events, including the World Surf League Big Wave Tour and the exclusive Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Anika event.
