For nearly two decades, Leigh Sabine carried a dark secret. To the world, she was a lively woman with grand stories of her past, but beneath the eccentric facade lay a horrifying truth: her husband’s body was hidden in plain sight.
A Woman of Many Stories
Born in Britain, Leigh Sabine led a life filled with theatrics. A self-proclaimed cabaret singer, she spun wild tales about her success in far-off lands. Friends and acquaintances never quite knew what to believe—she was a storyteller, always weaving the next chapter.
But behind the elaborate performances, there was something off. She and her husband, John Sabine, had lived an unusual, transient life. They moved across continents—from Britain to New Zealand, then to Australia, before returning to the UK. Leigh was always chasing fame. Along the way, they left behind five children in a New Zealand foster care facility, an abandonment that shocked even those closest to them.
John vanished in 1997. Leigh, however, continued as if nothing had happened. She made passing remarks about killing him, but no one took her seriously. That changed in 2015, when a prank turned horrifying.
A Grisly Discovery
Leigh Sabine died of cancer in October 2015, leaving behind an apartment in Wales and a strange package in her backyard. When new tenant Michelle James moved in, she heard rumors about Leigh keeping a medical skeleton in her garden shed.
James and a friend, Rhian Lee, decided to play a harmless joke—bringing the ‘skeleton’ inside and startling their neighbor. But when they opened the heavy package, they were met with something far worse.
“It wasn’t a skeleton at all,” Lee recalled in a 2024 Sky TV documentary. “There was this awful smell, and then liquid from the body got on my hands. We knew instantly we had to call the police.”
Authorities arrived quickly, and forensic tests soon confirmed the chilling truth: the remains were human. Not just any human—John Sabine, Leigh’s husband, missing since 1997.
A Crime Long Concealed
A forensic pathologist determined John had died from blunt force trauma to the head. His body had been chemically preserved, allowing Leigh to keep her secret hidden for nearly 20 years. Investigators were stunned. How had she managed to keep this gruesome truth from the world?
The police quickly pieced together the timeline. In 1997, John disappeared, yet Leigh continued to cash his pension checks for years. Neighbors recalled her joking about murder but never suspected she was serious.
During a 2016 inquest, Valerie Chalkley, a longtime friend, testified that Leigh once casually admitted to killing John in a phone call. “The problem with Leigh was that you never knew if she was telling the truth or not,” Chalkley told investigators. “She was always making up stories.”
Authorities concluded there was no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved. “It is my view that Leigh Sabine probably killed John Sabine and wrapped up his body,” Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Morgan stated at the time.
Unanswered Questions
Coroner Andrew Barkley acknowledged in 2024 that the full truth would never be known. “What precisely happened to John, and why, may forever remain a mystery,” he remarked.
Despite the shocking nature of the crime, some locals weren’t entirely surprised. “She was always a bit of an enigma,” one former neighbor admitted. “Looking back, it makes you wonder what else she was hiding.”
Leigh Sabine took the full truth to her grave, leaving behind an eerie legacy of deception and death. In the end, it was a simple prank—meant for laughter—that unraveled the chilling reality she had concealed for nearly two decades.
