Trump to Fire Half of IRS in Major Move

In a landmark move to reshape the federal government, President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing to cut the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) workforce in half, according to multiple sources familiar with the decision.

This move, which aligns with Trump’s longstanding commitment to reducing government overreach, is part of a broader effort to streamline federal agencies and shift revenue collection away from American taxpayers.

Why This Matters

For decades, conservatives have argued that the IRS has grown into a bloated bureaucracy that unfairly targets hardworking Americans. Trump’s vision for a leaner, more efficient government seeks to put an end to what many see as an out-of-control agency. With the support of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, the administration is making good on its promise to drain the swamp.

What to Know

  • The IRS currently employs approximately 90,000 people. The proposed downsizing will include voluntary buyouts, attrition, and layoffs, with a focus on reducing unnecessary positions.
  • Since taking office in January, Trump and Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have already eliminated nearly all probationary government employees who lacked civil service protections.
  • Around 7,000 IRS workers—many hired during the Biden administration—were let go last month as part of the first wave of cuts.
  • The restructuring effort will pave the way for a brand-new revenue collection model, one that Trump believes will ease the tax burden on American families and shift it to foreign entities that profit from U.S. trade.

The Big Picture: Replacing the IRS with the External Revenue Service

The Trump administration has been transparent about its ultimate goal: the complete abolition of the IRS. Instead of relying on domestic taxation, Trump has proposed an “External Revenue Service” (ERS) that would fund government operations through tariffs and duties on foreign nations.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reiterated this plan in a recent interview with Fox News, stating, “President Trump is done letting the American people foot the bill while the world takes advantage of us. The External Revenue Service will ensure that those who profit from America contribute their fair share.”

Trump’s Economic Showdown: Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China

This week, Trump escalated his America-first trade policy by imposing new tariffs on Mexico and Canada, two of the nation’s largest trading partners, while also raising duties on Chinese imports. The move immediately sent shockwaves through global markets:

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled by 1,300 points over two days.
  • The S&P 500 erased all post-election gains as businesses scrambled to assess the impact.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is leaving office, called the tariffs “very dumb” and vowed retaliation.
  • Mexico announced it would issue a response on Sunday, though analysts suggest the country has limited leverage.

Despite economic pushback, Trump remains resolute, acknowledging that there may be short-term challenges but declaring that it will all be “worth the price that must be paid.” Supporters argue that, for too long, American taxpayers have unfairly shouldered the burden of global economic growth, while foreign companies raked in billions tax-free.

What’s Next?

Trump’s proposed External Revenue Service must receive congressional approval before becoming reality. However, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has confirmed that Trump will appoint Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to oversee the transition.

The battle over the IRS is just beginning, but one thing is clear: Trump is not backing down. He is determined to redefine America’s economic model and put foreign interests—not U.S. taxpayers—on the hook for funding the government. As the left scrambles to oppose the plan, conservatives see an opportunity to reshape the nation’s financial structure for generations to come.
