Air Canada Slammed for Erasing Israel From In-Flight Maps—Issues Apology After Backlash

Air Canada has come under fire for a shocking discovery: at least 40 of its aircraft erased Israel from their in-flight maps, instead labeling the area as “Palestinian territories.” The omission, which was first flagged by a concerned passenger, quickly sparked outrage online, with many calling it a blatant political statement rather than a technical mistake.

The airline scrambled to contain the fallout, issuing a joint apology with Thales, the French company responsible for its in-flight entertainment systems. But many are questioning how such a major error could have gone unnoticed.

A ‘Technical Glitch’—Or Something More?

In a statement, Air Canada insisted the issue stemmed from an unnamed third-party supplier that designed the maps. “It was brought to our attention that the interactive map on certain aircraft did not consistently depict recognized international boundaries, including those of the State of Israel,” the airline claimed.

Air Canada added that the affected planes—part of its Boeing 737 MAX fleet—had their maps disabled immediately and that a corrected version had been installed. “The configuration of this particular system was not compliant with our general policy,” the airline stated.

Yet, critics argue that this is more than a simple oversight. “Israel is one of the most well-known countries in the world. It doesn’t just disappear from a map by accident,” said David Stein, a frequent traveler and business consultant from New York. “Someone made a decision here.”

Backlash Mounts: ‘Unacceptable and Offensive’

As news of the omission spread, social media exploded with criticism. Conservative commentators and pro-Israel activists denounced the incident as an attempt to rewrite reality.

“This isn’t a mistake. This is part of a growing effort to delegitimize Israel,” tweeted Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI). “Air Canada must be held accountable.”

Others pointed out the timing of the controversy, which comes amid rising global tensions over the Israel-Hamas conflict. “At a time when Israel is under attack, erasing it from the map sends a dangerous message,” said Emily Weissman, a spokesperson for the American-Israel Alliance.

Air Canada’s Next Steps

In an effort to reassure passengers, Air Canada has promised that all maps across its fleet now accurately display Israel. However, the airline has not disclosed the identity of the third-party map provider responsible for the change.

For many, the apology isn’t enough. Calls are growing for a deeper investigation into how and why Israel was removed from the maps in the first place.

“This shouldn’t have happened,” Weissman said. “And Air Canada needs to ensure it never happens again.”
