Top Doctor Accused of Attempting to Murder Wife on Hiking Trail

What was supposed to be a peaceful hike ended in a violent nightmare. Dr. Gerhardt Konig, 46, is now facing attempted murder charges after authorities say he tried to kill his wife, Arielle Konig, during a visit to the Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside lookout near Honolulu.

According to police sources, the couple had been walking the scenic trail Monday when the situation suddenly turned violent. Arielle, 36, told investigators her husband attacked her after she refused to take a photo with him. But that was only the beginning.

Arielle, a nuclear engineer, told officers that her husband pulled out two syringes filled with an unknown substance and attempted to stab her. When that failed, he allegedly shoved her toward the edge of the trail and beat her in the head with a rock.

She suffered traumatic injuries to her head and face and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Doctor on the Run

After the attack, Dr. Konig vanished into the dense terrain of Oahu. Honolulu Police launched a manhunt and issued a warning to residents: “Do not approach this man. Do not give rides to solo travelers.”

He was caught hours later, around 6:40 p.m. near the Pali Highway after a short foot chase with officers. Police later confirmed: “HPD officers located Gerhardt Konig near Pali Highway and arrested him after a brief foot pursuit. Charges are pending. Mahalo to the public for your assistance.”

Locals familiar with the lookout point say it’s a spot where people often go for photos — not assaults. “This is a peaceful place,” said one nearby hiker. “You never expect something like this here.”

From Pittsburgh to Paradise — Then Chaos

Dr. Konig is no stranger to prestigious medical institutions. He once served as an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh before relocating to Maui. He was working as an independent contractor for Maui Health — until now.

A spokesperson for Maui Health confirmed the suspension:
“Maui Health is committed to patient safety and upholding the highest standards of care. Dr. Konig has been suspended from the Medical Staff pending investigation. We take these concerns and the safety of our patients very seriously.”

Colleagues say they are stunned. “He seemed quiet but capable,” one former coworker told local media. “Nobody saw this coming.”

Marriage Behind the Scenes

Little is known publicly about the state of the couple’s relationship, but investigators are now digging deeper into their past.

Arielle’s LinkedIn reveals she’s a highly educated nuclear engineer. Friends describe her as “brilliant and composed.” The couple reportedly shared a home on Maui.

Detectives have not commented on a possible motive, but the use of syringes and the premeditated nature of the assault raise troubling questions. Was this a snap decision or a calculated plan?

More Charges Likely

As of Tuesday morning, formal charges were still pending. Konig remains in custody, and authorities are expected to file multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of dangerous substances.

This shocking case is likely to spark conversations about mental health, domestic violence, and the hidden lives of those who appear successful on the outside.

One hiker summed it up: “You just never know what someone’s capable of — even a doctor.”
