A tight-knit Oregon community is reeling after a tragic discovery left neighbors stunned and grieving. A mother and her three children, all under the age of 8, were found dead Tuesday afternoon in what authorities are describing as an isolated and deeply disturbing incident.
Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Cornelius—just 25 miles west of Portland—after a 911 caller reported the shocking scene around 3 p.m.
Inside a building attached to the home, officers found the bodies of a 37-year-old woman and her three children, ages 2, 5, and 7. A school official confirmed that the older children attended Cornelius Elementary School, with the 5-year-old in kindergarten and the 7-year-old in second grade.
No arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening, and authorities have not released details about how the four died. Deputy David Huey, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the deaths appear to be isolated and that there is no known threat to the public.
Huey, visibly emotional at a press conference, acknowledged the weight of the tragedy. “This is pretty hard to talk about,” he told reporters.
Cornelius Police Chief Mitch Coley echoed the heartbreak in a public statement, saying the town has been “shaken to its core” by what he called an “unthinkable tragedy.”
“While the investigation is still ongoing and details are limited, I want to acknowledge the heartbreak this brings to the families involved and our entire city,” Coley said. “This is a deeply emotional time for everyone: neighbors, friends, and the first responders who were called to the scene. I ask that we all come together with compassion and care.”
As investigators continue to search for answers, the small community of Cornelius is left mourning a profound and painful loss—one that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
