George Clooney Blames ‘Low Blood Pressure’ for His Underwhelming Reactions

Hollywood royalty George Clooney is known for staying cool under pressure—but it turns out, that same calm demeanor is causing some frustration at home.

In a new and delightfully candid interview with Broadway icon Patti LuPone for Variety’s Actors on Actors, the two-time Oscar winner revealed that his wife, human rights attorney Amal Clooney, keeps trying—and failing—to surprise him with parties. The reason? Clooney says it’s not that he doesn’t care. It’s just… his blood pressure is too low.

“My wife keeps trying to throw surprise parties for me. Every time people jump out, yelling ‘Surprise!’ I just calmly say, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’” Clooney said, smiling. “And Amal’s like, ‘Seriously? That’s it?’”

Clooney chalked it up to his steady nerves. “It doesn’t often appear that I’m nervous when I’m actually in knots,” he explained.

But don’t be fooled—this isn’t a man who’s unfazed by everything. When it comes to his long-awaited Broadway debut, even George admits he’s feeling the pressure. “I’m terrified,” he said. “It’s been nearly four decades since I’ve done a play, and this one’s personal.”

That play is a stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck, the critically acclaimed 2005 film Clooney directed and co-wrote. The story follows legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow’s showdown with Senator Joseph McCarthy—a timely look at truth, power, and courage. Clooney is producing and starring in the Broadway version, bringing the message back to life for a modern audience.

“This is a story about standing up when it’s not easy,” Clooney said. “I think that matters more than ever right now.”

Still, through all the career milestones, it’s his life at home with Amal and their twins, Ella and Alexander, that grounds him.

During a recent appearance on CBS Mornings, Clooney reflected on his marriage. “We’re really having a great time in life,” he said. “I remember sitting down with Gayle [King] a while back and saying Amal and I had never had an argument. That’s still true. We’re still waiting to have our first fight!”

He laughed and added, “We’re trying to find something to fight about—nothing’s worked yet.”

Now 63, Clooney has no illusions about how lucky he is. “There isn’t a single day I don’t wake up and think, ‘How did I get here?’” he said. “I hit the jackpot.”

From romantic red carpets to Broadway’s bright lights, Clooney may be the picture of composure—but don’t let that fool you. Behind the charm is a man who still gets butterflies, just not from surprise parties.
