Macron Humiliated on World Stage as Wife Shoves Him in the Face During Vietnam Visit (Video)

French President Emmanuel Macron’s diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia got off to a bizarre and humiliating start Sunday when his wife, Brigitte Macron, appeared to shove him in the face moments after their plane landed in Vietnam.

The jaw-dropping incident, caught on camera, is now sparking ridicule and speculation about the state of France’s First Couple — and Macron’s political credibility abroad.

The Shove Heard ‘Round the World

As the presidential aircraft’s door opened on the runway in Hanoi, Macron emerged smiling — only to be met by both of his wife’s hands pushing against his face. The French leader, looking visibly shaken, tried to recover with a forced wave and a grin, aware the cameras were rolling.

The 72-year-old first lady remained just inside the aircraft and did not acknowledge her husband’s outstretched arm as they descended the staircase to greet Vietnamese officials. Her cold body language was hard to miss.

French media initially tried to dismiss the incident, but Macron’s office was forced to confirm the footage’s authenticity after it went viral on social media, where it was widely mocked — especially by critics of the 47-year-old centrist leader.

Macron’s Response: Joke or Damage Control?

“We are squabbling and joking,” Macron insisted Monday, brushing off the incident as overblown. “People are saying all sorts of nonsense. Everyone needs to calm down.”

But political observers weren’t buying the excuse.

“He got humiliated in front of the entire world,” said Jacques Lemoine, a former diplomat and frequent Macron critic. “If this is how he manages his marriage, how is he handling international affairs?”

An unnamed source from Macron’s inner circle told AFP the moment was merely “a moment of decompressing” before official meetings began. But some have pointed out the timing couldn’t be worse.

A Strange and Controversial Marriage

The Macron marriage has long been a source of intrigue — and controversy. Brigitte was Emmanuel’s high school drama teacher when they met. He was 15. She was 39, married, and a mother of three. The pair married in 2007 after years of secrecy and scandal.

That unusual backstory has made Macron a target of conservative and nationalist critics at home and abroad — and this latest episode has reignited that scrutiny.

“Let’s be honest — people already think their relationship is odd,” said conservative French columnist Nathalie Delatour. “When your wife is old enough to be your mother and she’s slapping you on the runway of a foreign country, it doesn’t inspire confidence.”

Trying to Compete with the U.S. and China — While Getting Slapped

Macron’s trip to Vietnam is part of a broader push to position France as a third force in Asia — an alternative to both the United States and China. He’s expected to visit Indonesia and Singapore next, promoting trade and defense partnerships with former French colonies and regional powers.

But critics say Macron’s weak leadership and bizarre personal baggage make that a tough sell.

“While Biden and Trump are making hard moves in the Pacific, Macron is getting face-palmed by his wife on the tarmac,” said retired U.S. ambassador Greg Winters. “You can’t lead a geopolitical movement when you can’t lead your own home.”

As the footage continues to circulate online, some European officials are reportedly fuming behind the scenes. One senior EU diplomat told Le Figaro off-record, “We asked Macron to show strength in Asia. Instead, he gave us a soap opera.”

A Meme Magnet and a Media Headache

The clip has already become meme material across social media, where users are pairing the shove with captions like “When she’s still mad you didn’t take out the trash — and now you’re in Vietnam.”

Pro-Russian influencers and online conspiracy accounts have also seized on the moment, using it to push anti-Western narratives. Macron’s team is now blaming those accounts for “spinning” the footage into a political disaster.

But even without Russia’s help, the damage may already be done.

“Macron is supposed to represent the strength of the French Republic,” said Jean-Pierre Vannier, a political scientist at the Sorbonne. “Instead, he looks like a man being publicly scolded by his wife on foreign soil. It’s not a good look.”

Whether it was a joke, a lovers’ spat, or a deeper sign of trouble, one thing is clear: Emmanuel Macron just got shoved into a political punchline — and the world noticed.
