In a twist no one saw coming, far-left firebrand Elizabeth Warren is siding with President Donald Trump on one of the most contentious issues in Washington: eliminating the federal debt ceiling entirely.
“It is possible that hell has frozen over,” the Massachusetts Democrat admitted in a New York Times guest essay on Thursday. “President Trump and I agree on something very important: Abolish the debt limit.”
That’s right — the same senator who’s spent years torching Trump’s policies now finds herself echoing his call to end what both are calling a “political gimmick” that puts the U.S. economy at risk.
Trump and Warren: Unlikely Allies on Fiscal Reform
President Trump had already floated the idea in a fiery Truth Social post last month, declaring, “I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING.”
Trump warned that the debt limit has become “too devastating to be put in the hands of political people that may want to use it despite the horrendous effect it could have on our Country and, indirectly, even the World.”
Warren, writing in the Times, doubled down on that sentiment: “The debt limit is a political tool that allows the minority party to threaten economic collapse. It serves no other function. None.”
Rand Paul Isn’t Buying It: ‘A Terrible Idea’
But not all Republicans are on board. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul slammed the proposal and the broader spending plan tied to it — what Trump has proudly called his “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
“A $5 trillion debt ceiling hike is a terrible idea,” Paul told reporters this week. “This isn’t fiscal responsibility. This is political theater dressed up as reform.”
Paul warned that scrapping the debt ceiling would remove one of the last checks on runaway federal spending, saying it would greenlight “blank checks for both parties.”
Warren’s True Colors Still Showing
Despite backing Trump on this one issue, Warren made it clear she’s still no ally of the Republican Party. In her op-ed, she blasted what she called “tax handouts for millionaires, billionaires, and corporate giants” buried in the GOP’s current spending bill.
She also claimed the bill would strip health insurance from “16 million Americans,” calling the package “morally bankrupt.”
“The president is right on this point,” she wrote. “Let’s scrap the debt ceiling once and for all.” But she added, “The rest of the bill is a disaster, and I’ll keep fighting it.”
A Political Earthquake or a Brief Alignment?
Warren has long pushed for abolishing the debt ceiling, regardless of which party holds power. What’s different now is the momentum behind the idea — and Trump’s full-throated endorsement.
With Trump once again leading the charge from the White House and bipartisan frustration over repeated budget brinkmanship, Washington may finally be edging toward a radical change in how it handles its credit card.
Still, one can’t help but wonder: when Elizabeth Warren and Donald Trump agree on anything — has Washington truly gone mad?
Stay tuned. The 2025 spending war is just heating up.
