Veteran journalist Terry Moran is striking out on his own after nearly three decades at ABC News — and just days after a social media firestorm got him fired.
Moran, 65, took to Substack on Wednesday to announce his return to journalism under his own banner, just 24 hours after being booted from the Disney-owned network over a controversial post targeting White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.
“For almost 28 years, I was a reporter and anchor for ABC News. As you may have heard, I am not there anymore. I’m here with you, on Substack,” Moran said in a video message. “This amazing space — and I can’t wait to get at it. Get into the important work that we all have to do in this time of such trouble for our country.”
The journalist teased plans to share his own original reporting and interviews, though he admitted it might take a little time to get everything running smoothly.
Moran’s decision to go independent comes on the heels of a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), where he torched Miller as “a man richly endowed with the capacity for hatred.” In the now-deleted post, he accused Miller of running not on “brains” but on “bile,” calling him “a world-class hater” whose “hatreds are his spiritual nourishment.”
The remarks drew swift backlash from within ABC News. Initially suspended, Moran was officially fired on Tuesday — just three days before his contract was set to expire.
“The post does not reflect the views of ABC News and violated our standards — as a result, Terry Moran has been suspended pending further evaluation,” a spokesperson said after the initial controversy broke. But by Tuesday, the network made the split official, saying, “Based on his recent post — which was a clear violation of ABC News policies — we have made the decision to not renew.”
Sources inside the newsroom weren’t holding back. “He should be fired,” one insider told The Post. “People inside are pissed at Terry for screwing things up for the network.”
Moran’s career at ABC spanned some of the network’s biggest political moments — from moderating election night coverage to interviewing President Trump in the Oval Office as recently as April.
