New details have emerged in the shocking and sudden death of celebrity chef Anne Burrell, who was found dead Tuesday morning in her Brooklyn home at age 55.
According to the New York City Fire Department, a 911 caller reported a “cardiac arrest” before paramedics arrived at the scene. Burrell was already dead when emergency services got there. The NYPD confirmed she was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at around 7:50 a.m., and EMS pronounced her dead at the scene.
While the official cause of death has not yet been released, the sudden nature of her passing has left fans and friends reeling—especially since Burrell was seen out and about, seemingly in good health, just hours earlier.
On Monday night, the Food Network star took the stage for an improv show at The Second City New York. Audience members and friends described her as being in high spirits, full of energy, and “her usual fun, outgoing self.” One person who was at the event said Burrell “seemed fine when the show ended” and added that everyone is “shocked and confused” by her sudden passing.
Just days earlier, she shared what would become her final Instagram post, posing with the famed “Green Lady of Brooklyn,” Elizabeth Eaton Rosenthal. Burrell gushed in the caption, saying she had been hoping to run into the 84-year-old neighborhood icon. Rosenthal later returned to the post, leaving a heartfelt tribute: “I just love you and so sorry… I will be waiting for you in my garden.”
Burrell’s family released a statement confirming her death, calling her “a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend.” They added, “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world.”
Best known for hosting Food Network’s hit series Worst Cooks in America from 2010 to 2024, Burrell became a household name with her spiky blond hair, bold personality, and infectious enthusiasm for food. Her culinary career spanned decades, and she remained a passionate educator and entertainer until the end.
Food Network issued a tribute, calling her “a remarkable person and culinary talent,” and said, “Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.”
Burrell is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married in 2021 after meeting on Bumble in 2018. The wedding was a star-studded affair, with fellow celebrity chef Rachael Ray serving as a bridesmaid. Burrell once said she didn’t think marriage would ever be part of her story—but meeting Claxton changed everything.
“I was always really focused on my career and marriage was never a huge thing in my life that I was looking for,” she said in 2020. “Then when I met Stuart, my opinion about all that changed.”
She is also survived by Claxton’s son, Javier, her mother Marlene, her sister Jane, and her brother Ben.
Burrell’s passing marks a heartbreaking loss in the culinary world, and fans everywhere continue to mourn the vibrant personality who brought joy and flavor into their lives.
