A Texas pastor’s family is mourning the unthinkable after their 18-year-old son, fresh out of high school, vanished beneath a Washington waterfall on what was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime.
A Journey That Ended in Tragedy
Grant Herridge, a Temple, Texas teen known for his infectious spirit, embarked on an ambitious road trip this month, aiming to conquer seven national parks with friends before college. The journey ended in heartbreak on June 8, when Grant slipped and fell from the top of the dramatic 50-foot Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park.
“He loved doing exciting, fun things,” said Brad Ray Herridge, Grant’s father and pastor at Ocker Brethren Church. “We talked about this trip for months. He wanted to see the country before heading off to Baylor.”
Park officials say Grant was walking across slick rocks at the top of the falls when disaster struck. Despite frantic rescue efforts, his body has not yet been found. Search teams have been hampered by treacherous weather, but the family hasn’t lost hope that he will be recovered and brought home.
A Life That Lit Up a Community
Grant was set to attend Baylor University in the fall—a lifelong dream for the Herridge family. “Baylor’s in his heart,” Brad explained. “His mother and I both graduated from there. His mom even works at Baylor.”
Friends and teachers from Vanguard College Preparatory in Waco, where Grant recently graduated, remember him as a beacon of kindness and energy. “You were a bright light in our halls,” the school posted in tribute. “Your joy, faith, and warmth made everyone feel welcome.”
His father shared a detail that resonated with many. “Grant wore a ring for years with the words, ‘While we wait for life, life passes.’ He lived that motto every day.”
Family’s Mission: Living in His Honor
The Herridge family, shattered by their loss, is choosing to focus on Grant’s legacy of positivity. “We are going to honor him by living life to the fullest in the future,” Brad said. “That’s what he would want for all of us.”
As the search continues, the tight-knit Texas town of Temple stands behind the Herridge family, united in grief but inspired by a young man who refused to let life slip by.
