Armed Woman, 64, Shuts Down Major Highway in 5-Hour ‘Lawn Chair Standoff’

A Texas highway turned into a scene of chaos Thursday when an armed woman staged a tense five-hour standoff with police—while calmly sitting in a lawn chair in the middle of traffic.

The incident unfolded on I-45 South in Spring, Texas, after the woman crashed into an 18-wheeler. No one was hurt in the wreck, but what happened next brought traffic to a grinding halt and sparked a major law enforcement response.

Instead of waiting for help or exchanging information, the woman reportedly pulled a folding lawn chair from her car, sat down in the center lane of the freeway, and drew a handgun. She held it to her head and throat as stunned drivers called 911.

“We had to treat this like a live hostage situation,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “She refused to put the weapon down. It was volatile and unpredictable.”

The highway was immediately shut down in both directions. Drivers were stranded for miles as Harris County Constable Precinct 4 deputies, negotiators, and a Crisis Intervention Response Team tried to talk the woman down.

“It wasn’t just about traffic. This was about saving a life—hers and potentially others,” said one officer on the scene.

Officials said the woman expressed suicidal thoughts and displayed signs of severe mental distress, including a history of psychosis. “There was no rationality in her behavior,” Gonzalez added. “It was a deeply unstable mental health episode.”

At one point, the woman’s daughter was brought to the scene. Deputies say that brief moment of human connection may have saved her life.

“Letting her talk to her daughter calmed things,” Gonzalez said. “She realized she was loved. That kept her from doing something tragic.”

The incident is already stirring conversations across Texas about the growing intersection between mental health breakdowns and gun access. Conservatives have long argued for the need to protect Second Amendment rights while ensuring common-sense protections are in place for those suffering from mental illness.

“We can’t afford to ignore mental health crises anymore,” said a Texas lawmaker Friday. “But disarming lawful citizens isn’t the answer. We need better mental health support, not more government overreach.”

Eventually, after nearly five hours in the scorching Texas sun, the woman stood up and surrendered. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Authorities have not released her name and say charges are not expected at this time.

The unsettling scene on I-45 may be over, but it’s a wake-up call for a nation still struggling with how to handle mental health in an armed society.

“This wasn’t a criminal,” said one officer. “This was a woman in crisis. And thank God it ended without bloodshed.”

  1. Should not have taken but less than 5 minutes to remove her stupid ass . Yall ever heard of a deer rifle

  2. While I certainly do back keeping forearms out of the hands of those with those having substance abuse or mental illness issues, the anti-2nd Amendment crowd will immediately expand things to include anyone who has ever been on medication or has successively recovered from past problems just as they have in the past. And they’ll try to include everything from aspirin to application of medically applied and legally controlled painkillers individuals may have used under a doctor’s supervision in the past, including the distant past.
