A terrifying encounter at a popular Australian beach turned into a dramatic rescue when a teenage boy was mauled by a shark—and saved by a heroic surfer who didn’t hesitate to fight back.
The incident unfolded at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, where 16-year-old Ashton was enjoying a swim on what started as a normal day. But in an instant, chaos struck. A large bull shark, estimated to be around seven feet long, suddenly closed in on the teen. According to witnesses, the shark had been chasing a seal in the area before it redirected its attention toward Ashton.
The shark lunged, biting him on both the arm and leg. Screams from onlookers rang out across the beach as people realized what was happening. That’s when a nearby surfer made a split-second decision that likely saved the teen’s life. Paddling directly toward the shark, the man punched it square in the head—a method of defense experts often recommend when encountering aggressive sharks.
The surfer’s brave move startled the predator just long enough to get Ashton onto a surfboard with help from others who rushed to assist. But even as they paddled frantically back to shore, the shark remained close, trailing them through the surf in a chilling pursuit.
Once on the beach, an off-duty paramedic who happened to be nearby quickly jumped into action. He applied pressure to Ashton’s wounds and worked to slow the bleeding until emergency responders arrived. Given the severity of the injuries, a rescue helicopter was called to the scene and airlifted Ashton to the intensive care unit at Gold Coast University Hospital in Southport.
Footage of the harrowing aftermath has since surfaced online. One TikTok video, posted by a fellow surfer, captures the scene just moments after the attack. The caption reads: “Video from Arch and Katy just after a surf in Caba today. Hope 16 yo Ashton is ok.” The video has been widely shared as support pours in for the injured teen.

TMZ reports that Ashton remains in serious but stable condition as he continues receiving treatment. Meanwhile, a second helicopter was dispatched to locate the shark in the area, but the search came up empty.
Beachgoers described the scene as surreal and terrifying. “It was like something out of a movie,” said one witness. “You could see the shark’s fin cutting through the water behind them. That surfer is a hero. He didn’t even think twice—he just went straight for it.”
Bull sharks are known to thrive in warm, shallow coastal waters and are considered one of the most dangerous shark species due to their aggressive nature and frequent contact with humans. Shark experts warn that increased seal populations in certain areas can sometimes draw predators closer to shore.
Authorities have temporarily closed the beach and issued warnings to swimmers and surfers to stay out of the water as the investigation continues. While rare, shark attacks do happen in Australia’s coastal waters—and this incident is a stark reminder of the risks.
Still, many are hailing the surfer’s actions as nothing short of lifesaving. Without his quick response, the outcome could have been far worse.
