What was supposed to be a scenic cruise through one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic bays turned into a deadly disaster on Saturday afternoon, as a tourist boat packed with Vietnamese families capsized during a violent thunderstorm — killing at least 34 people and leaving 23 more unaccounted for.
The vessel, named Wonder Sea, had 48 passengers and five crew members on board when it flipped over in Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its towering limestone cliffs and emerald waters. All on board were Vietnamese nationals, many of them on vacation from Hanoi, the country’s capital.
“It was chaos,” said one unnamed survivor, speaking to local reporters through tears. “The sky turned black in seconds. There was no warning. Then we were in the water.”
According to VNExpress, powerful wind gusts struck without notice, toppling the boat and trapping dozens inside its hull. Rescue teams managed to save 11 people, including a 14-year-old boy who clung to life inside the overturned vessel for four agonizing hours before being pulled to safety.
Children Among the Victims
The tragedy hit especially hard as early reports indicated nearly 20 children were aboard. Families had boarded Wonder Sea for what was meant to be a leisurely sightseeing trip through Vietnam’s famous bay — a top destination for domestic tourists during the summer.
As emergency teams scoured the bay for the missing, helicopters buzzed overhead and dive units plunged into the murky waters. Officials warn that time is running out.
Incoming Tropical Storm Raises Alarm
As if the situation couldn’t get worse, Vietnam’s weather bureau issued a stark warning: Tropical Storm Wipha is heading straight for the northern coastline — including Ha Long Bay — early next week. Rescuers now face a race against time as worsening weather could complicate already harrowing search operations.
Past Parallels, Ongoing Questions
This latest maritime catastrophe draws eerie parallels to last year’s deadly incident in Egypt, when a tourist diving boat sank in the Red Sea, leaving several divers presumed dead. In both cases, storm warnings either went ignored or arrived too late.
Vietnamese authorities have not yet explained why the Wonder Sea set sail despite ominous weather conditions, but an investigation is now underway. Boat operators in Ha Long Bay — many of whom rely on daily tours for their livelihoods — are now under scrutiny.
As of Saturday night, grieving families gathered along the docks in Quang Ninh province, praying for news of loved ones and demanding answers.
“My wife and two children were on that boat,” one man shouted, according to a local television report. “They should never have left the shore.”
