Councilman Set on Fire with Gasoline in Shocking Workplace Attack

In a horrifying attack that has stunned the Commonwealth and reignited calls for tougher crime policies, a sitting Virginia city councilman was doused in gasoline and set on fire in broad daylight inside his own office Wednesday morning.

Lee Vogler, 39, a respected conservative voice on the Danville City Council and a local business leader, was working at Showcase Magazine when, according to eyewitnesses and police, a man stormed into the building carrying a five-gallon bucket of gasoline.

“He just came through the door like a man possessed,” said Andrew Brooks, owner of Showcase Magazine and a witness to the scene. “He didn’t say a word. Just marched in, found Lee, and then everything happened so fast—he poured gas all over him. The smell was overwhelming. Then, suddenly, Lee was on fire. It was like something out of a nightmare.”

Police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, who reportedly fled the scene but was apprehended just blocks away after a brief manhunt.
