A routine Monday afternoon at Glacier Park International Airport turned into a scene of chaos and flames when two planes collided on the runway, creating a towering black cloud that could be seen for miles.
The incident unfolded just after 3 p.m., when a small aircraft reportedly burst into flames while approaching the runway. According to local authorities, the burning plane veered into a second, stationary aircraft, triggering an explosion that witnesses described as “like something out of a war movie.”
“Suddenly, there was this massive orange fireball and a wall of smoke,” said Ben Garrison, a local artist who captured dramatic photos of the scene. “You could feel the heat from across the parking lot.”
Miraculously, all four passengers aboard the burning plane survived. Two of them sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen confirmed. No one was aboard the second plane at the time of the crash.
“It could have been much worse,” Hagen told reporters. “Given the fire and the collision, the fact that everyone made it out alive is nothing short of remarkable.”
The cause of the fiery crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. Authorities have not yet disclosed the make or model of either aircraft involved.
Airport operations were temporarily halted as emergency crews from the Kalispell Police Department, Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, and local fire departments battled the blaze and secured the area.
Photos of the disaster quickly went viral, showing billowing black smoke hanging over Kalispell’s skyline — a stark contrast to the serene mountain backdrop. The city, located in northwest Montana, is widely known as the gateway to Glacier National Park, a tourism hub that draws more than three million visitors each year.
For residents, the sight was jarring. “Kalispell is such a peaceful place,” said airport employee Sarah Miller. “To see something like this happen here… it shakes you.”
Authorities are expected to release more details in the coming days as investigators comb through debris on the runway.
