Passengers Told to Pee in Bottles After Toilets Stop Working on Flight

Passengers on a Virgin Australia flight from Bali to Brisbane endured a nightmare mid-air ordeal after every single toilet on the plane stopped working, forcing travelers to relieve themselves in bottles, sinks, and broken lavatories.

Flight VA50 took off from Denpasar on Thursday afternoon despite one rear lavatory already being out of service. With limited engineering support at the airport, Virgin decided not to delay or cancel the six-hour trip. But less than halfway into the flight, disaster struck — the remaining two toilets completely malfunctioned, leaving the Boeing 737 MAX 8 without a single working bathroom.

“It was humiliating,” one passenger told The Australian. “An elderly woman couldn’t hold it and ended up wetting herself in front of everyone. The crew told us we’d have to either use bottles or go on top of whatever was already in the toilet. The smell was unbearable, and urine started seeping onto the floor.”

Virgin Australia released a statement confirming the incident, calling it an “issue that affected the serviceability of the lavatories.” The airline apologized to passengers, promising to credit customers for the flight and contact them directly about compensation.

But aviation workers are furious, calling the incident a serious health and safety hazard. The Transport Workers Union blasted the airline, saying the situation reflects an industry-wide trend of prioritizing profits over passenger welfare.

“This is a deeply distressing event that put both passengers and crew at risk,” TWU assistant secretary Emily McMillan said. “Airlines are making decisions based on getting planes out as fast as possible, not on protecting the community.”

This isn’t the first time Virgin Australia has faced a mid-air bathroom disaster. Just last year, AFL players traveling from Launceston to Perth were forced to urinate in sinks after a four-hour flight’s toilets failed when the plane ran out of water 30 minutes after takeoff.
