A family outing to one of California’s most scenic coastlines turned into an unthinkable tragedy when a 5-year-old boy was fatally struck by a falling rock at Rincon Beach in Ventura County.
Authorities say the accident happened around 6:40 p.m. on August 31, as little Maxwell — identified by loved ones on a GoFundMe page — was climbing rocks with his best friend. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the boy slipped while scaling the boulders, causing another large rock to dislodge and crash down on him.
Maxwell suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency efforts, he passed away later that evening.
The horrific accident unfolded in front of Maxwell’s parents and close friends, leaving the entire group traumatized.
“Max was everything to them,” family friend Bryan Holloway wrote on the GoFundMe page. “They were avid campers who loved showing him the beauty of California’s beaches, deserts, and mountains. He lived for adventure.”
According to Holloway, Rincon Beach — a popular surf and hiking spot off Highway 101 — was one of the family’s favorite places to explore. But what was meant to be another day of fun became a devastating reminder of how quickly life can change.
Loved ones are remembering Maxwell as an energetic, curious, and adventurous little boy who brought light into every room.
“Max had an adventurous soul,” Holloway shared. “He lived and experienced more in his short five years than many kids ever get to. He brought so much joy to his parents’ lives and everyone lucky enough to know him.”
Photos shared by the family show Maxwell smiling on camping trips, exploring Southern California’s wild landscapes, and laughing with friends.
In the days since the tragedy, the community has come together to support Maxwell’s grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign launched to help cover funeral costs and grief counseling has already raised over $55,000 of its $60,000 goal.
“Our hearts are broken,” another family friend wrote in a message to donors. “No parent should ever have to experience this kind of loss.”
Authorities have not released additional safety warnings for Rincon Beach, but the incident has renewed concerns about rockfall hazards along the rugged California coast.
