Dem Mayor Blamed After Ukrainian Refugee Stabbed to Death on Charlotte Train

North Carolina’s Democratic Governor Josh Stein is facing mounting backlash after a Ukrainian refugee was brutally murdered on a Charlotte light rail train. The attack, caught on surveillance video, shows 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska being stabbed multiple times, including once in the neck. She fled Ukraine’s war for safety in the U.S., only to die on a public train.

The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Court records show Brown’s lengthy rap sheet spans more than a decade, including charges for robbery, felony larceny, and communicating threats. Police confirmed the attack was random — Zarutska and Brown did not know each other.

Stein broke his silence Monday after days of social media outrage, posting on X: “I am heartbroken for Iryna’s family… We need more cops on the beat to keep people safe.” He urged lawmakers to pass his law-enforcement recruitment and retention package, which seeks funding for more officers.

But Stein’s response hasn’t calmed critics. Conservatives accuse him of staying silent until the video went viral and argue that his past “soft-on-crime” policies enabled Brown’s release. “He was arrested 14 times,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Marone posted. “The police did their jobs. You did not.”

The Trump administration seized on the case, blasting what it calls “woke justice” policies. President Trump promised a crackdown on violent crime and said the tragedy proves the need for stricter sentencing laws. Republicans in Raleigh are already preparing legislation aimed at tightening bail and keeping repeat offenders behind bars.

Meanwhile, Charlotte officials face growing pressure to increase security on public transit, where staffing shortages and safety concerns have persisted. Zarutska’s murder has turned into a flashpoint in the national debate over crime, immigration, and public safety — one Republicans are eager to fight heading into 2026.

  1. Has anyone heard about this on msm? I haven’t. It’s only been on conservative sites that it has been reported. The libs must not want anyone to know there’s crime of this nature.

    1. MSM corruption, plain and simple. The end-justify-the-means journalism. And they themselves must know it. People need to tell them. Pay their employer’s office a visit.

    2. My beef is with the MSM: There are injustices and victimizations that get mis-reported or ignored as though those injustices/victimizations are ideologically and therefore socially/politically acceptable.

The media (i.e. news, literary, social and entertainment), though especially the mainstream news outlets, can be largely credited for the creation and maintenance of current societal/institutional racial standards and even hypocrisies in Western society.

Anti-Caucasian racism or violence, as a timely example, can be expected to not receive objective coverage, if any at all, by the neo-liberal news media, quite unlike when the racial makeup is reversed.

Their justification? I find it likely they deem such occurrences, however newsworthy, as not being a social/societal problem and therefore un-worthy of proper coverage. Over my decades of news consumption, I’ve heard this lame justification more than once, although it’s not even their professional/objective prerogative to do so in the first place.

Such reporters/editors appear to feel they can be both journalistically activistic AND truly objective/professional. They, however, cannot. On the contrary, they’re placing the profession and themselves in disrepute, to put it mildly.

According to my journalism instructor approximately three decades ago, the probable rarity of such an assault (in this case, anti-Caucasian racism or violence) would make it newsworthy; and the opposite would apply to the common or usual occurrence, such as that resulting from a recurring social/societal problem.

And, all the more disturbing and concerning about that news media’s failure to condemn or even properly cover such racist assaults is that it encourages the justice system to not objectively/fully charge and prosecute those responsible.

Not only can the racists (of color) not be held properly criminally accountable, they may also notice the news outlets downplaying or omitting the racial motivation behind such serious crimes, perhaps leaving the impression that the inexcusably vicious acts were somehow morally justified. It’s in our flawed, if not corrupted, human nature (especially as children) to observe such societal cues and take advantage of them.

… On such matters, the media are far beyond just being biased.

  2. The media coverage — or, in such cases, the glaring lack thereof — is outrageous!

With anti-Caucasian racism or violence, for example, it can be expected to not receive objective coverage, if any at all, by the neo-liberal mainstream news-media, quite unlike when the victim is Black or Brown and the accused is Caucasian.

Their justification? It’s likely they’ve deemed such occurrences, however newsworthy, as not being a social/societal problem and therefore un-fit to publish. Over my decades of news consumption, I’ve heard this excuse more than once, although it’s not even their professional prerogative to do so in the first place.
