It was supposed to be another thrilling Saturday for ESPN’s Tori Petry, covering one of the Big 12’s most unpredictable rivalries. Instead, it turned into a viral moment — and a painful one — after the veteran sideline reporter was leveled by a college quarterback sprinting out of bounds.

The hit came during the second quarter of Baylor’s nail-biting 35–34 victory over Kansas State in Waco. Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson was charging up the right sideline when he was shoved by Baylor defender Kyland Reed. Momentum carried Johnson straight into Petry, who never saw him coming.

Witnesses described the collision as “brutal.” One fan video showed Petry being sent airborne, her equipment tumbling as players and coaches rushed over. “You could hear the crowd gasp,” said Baylor fan Michael Rhodes, who was seated near the play. “It looked bad. She went flying.”

A visibly shaken Johnson immediately helped Petry to her feet as medical staff checked on her. Miraculously, she appeared uninjured and finished her on-field duties for ESPN’s Big 12 broadcast. “Tori’s a pro,” one ESPN colleague posted later on X. “Takes a hit like a linebacker and still gets the story.”

Petry, who joined ESPN in 2021 after seven years covering the Detroit Lions as a multimedia journalist, is no stranger to high-speed sidelines. A University of Florida graduate, she’s become a familiar face on Big 12 on ESPN+, known for her calm under pressure and sharp game-day reporting.

As of Sunday morning, Petry hadn’t publicly commented on the incident, though clips of the moment have exploded online — racking up millions of views across TikTok and X, where users alternated between expressing concern and applauding her resilience. “She took that like a champ,” one commenter wrote. “Put her in the game!”

The dramatic sideline moment capped off an already chaotic afternoon for college football. Baylor’s comeback victory came after trailing late in the fourth quarter, energizing fans who had nearly given up on the Bears. But Petry’s collision became the most replayed highlight of the day — and a reminder of how unpredictable the sidelines can be.

“I’ve been hit before,” Petry once said in a 2019 interview about the risks of her job. “But you never really get used to a 200-pound athlete barreling your way.”

She may have to update that quote.

  1. I officiated for 36 years. It seems elementary that football is a contact sport and the
sideline is subject to physical, contact by full speed players doing their best to make
a tackle or to gain yardage.
