Democratic Lawmakers Storm Speaker’s Office in Capitol Chaos Over Epstein Vote (Video)

In a dramatic scene that underscored deepening tensions on Capitol Hill, several Democratic lawmakers were caught on video Tuesday night storming House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office — demanding he immediately swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva of Arizona.

What began as a late-night protest quickly spiraled into chaos. Lawmakers reportedly clashed with a Capitol Police officer, tore down a sign, and shouted slogans outside the Speaker’s private suite.

Video circulating online shows Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), and Nanette Barragán (D-Calif.) locking arms with Grijalva and chanting “swear her in” as they tried to push past security. Officers blocked their entry, leading to what witnesses described as a “screaming match” in the hallway.

At one point, Jayapal appeared to yank at the sign posted outside Johnson’s office. Stansbury leaned over and tampered with the placard as aides recorded the scene on their phones.

Speaker Johnson confirmed the altercation Wednesday morning.

“They stormed my office. Maybe you saw the video — they berated a Capitol Police officer who was just doing his job,” Johnson said. “It shows again their disregard for law enforcement, which we’ve seen time and time again from the left.”

He added that the group “tore down signage and turned the hallway into a circus.”

At the center of the uproar is Grijalva’s yet-to-be-administered oath of office following her September 23 special election victory. Democrats say Johnson has been dragging his feet in an effort to delay her vote — a vote that could give Democrats the edge to force action on a controversial bipartisan petition.

That petition, introduced by Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), demands the Justice Department release all remaining files tied to Jeffrey Epstein — the disgraced financier whose network of high-profile associates has long been the subject of speculation and secrecy.

With the petition one vote short of passage, Grijalva’s swearing-in could break the stalemate. Her addition to the House would mark the 218th signature needed to advance the measure.

Republicans have dismissed the protest as “theatrical grandstanding.”

“It’s no coincidence this stunt came the same week Democrats are losing ground with working Americans,” said Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.). “They’d rather pull a late-night protest than talk about inflation, the border, or the economy President Trump is rebuilding.”

Johnson also used the moment to highlight what he described as a “pattern of hostility toward law enforcement.”

“We’ve seen this movie before,” he told Fox News. “Whether it’s defunding the police or harassing officers in the Capitol, the radical left treats law enforcement like the enemy.”

Democrats, meanwhile, defended their actions. A staffer for Jayapal claimed the group was “peacefully demanding representation” for Arizona’s new congresswoman.

The clash unfolded as the government shutdown entered its third week, with Speaker Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer still deadlocked over spending levels. The Biden-appointed officials remaining in key agencies have been openly clashing with the Trump White House, fueling broader partisan resentment across Washington.

Grijalva, the daughter of longtime progressive Rep. Raúl Grijalva, campaigned on promises of “transparency” and “justice for victims of sexual abuse.” But critics argue her first act in Washington — joining a hallway protest — undermines her credibility.

Capitol Police confirmed no arrests were made but said they are reviewing footage of the incident “to ensure officer safety and adherence to protocols.”

Johnson’s team says the Speaker has no intention of rushing the swearing-in ceremony “for the sake of a media stunt.”

“There’s a process, and we’re going to follow it,” Johnson said. “We don’t bend the rules just because Democrats throw a tantrum.”

The incident marks one of the most contentious moments yet in the 2025 session, as the Trump administration and GOP-led House push forward with aggressive oversight measures — and Democrats resort to increasingly theatrical tactics to make their voices heard.
