When one woman missed her great-grandmother’s funeral, she thought the guilt would haunt her forever. But years later, she says an unexpected sign gave her the peace she’d been searching for.
Posting her story on Reddit, the woman explained that she’d been living overseas when her great-grandmother passed away at age 90. “She passed away… surrounded by my whole family, except me,” she wrote. “The guilt ate me up inside for years.”
Her great-grandmother, born in 1922 in Poland, had survived World War II, raised two children on her own after losing her husband, and became what the family called their “matriarch.” To the Reddit user, she was the “toughest lady to exist” — which made missing her funeral even more painful.
As time passed, that guilt only grew stronger. Then, one night, during a particularly rough week in her studies, she said she found herself silently begging for a sign that her great-grandmother was okay — that she was happy, wherever she was.
The next day, something happened that made her stop in her tracks. While logged into an online course, she noticed a comment from someone with her great-grandmother’s exact name. “She was saying how much she enjoyed the module,” the woman shared. “The name isn’t rare in Poland, but the timing? It just felt… special.”
She admitted that she’s not the kind of person who usually believes in spiritual “signs,” but this one hit differently. “Seeing her name show up the day after asking for any sign was like a boon from God,” she said.
The moment lifted the heavy guilt that had followed her for years. “I believe that once someone passes, they’re still around in spirit, looking after you,” she wrote.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest coincidences that remind us — love doesn’t really leave.
