Michelle Obama is still mad about a pair of shorts she wore in 2009. In a new episode of her podcast, the former First Lady brought up an old controversy — and made it political.
“The fact that I had to think so hard about wearing shorts while my husband didn’t have to think at all? That was really infuriating,” she said.
In August 2009, the Obamas flew on Air Force One to the Grand Canyon. Michelle debated what to wear. A dress would look strange for a hike. Shorts? Too casual for a First Lady, she thought.
“Barack just said, ‘I’ll roll up my sleeves,’” she recalled. “That was it. Men can do that.”
She chose Bermuda shorts. The media went wild. Headlines mocked her:
“Who Wears Short Shorts? Michelle Obama.”
“The Shorts Heard Round the World.”
Michelle said she felt judged.
“People would call me ‘un-American’ if I wore a dress. And they still criticized me for wearing shorts.”
Now, in 2025, Michelle Obama is reliving the moment on her podcast, “IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson.” Many wonder why she’s bringing it up again.
Some believe it’s just another way she’s playing the victim.
“This is typical Michelle,” said Rep. Lauren Boebert. “Always complaining. Always rewriting the past.”
Others say it’s part of a pattern.
“She wants sympathy. But the truth is, Melania Trump got criticized too — and she didn’t whine,” said conservative commentator Dan Lentz.
Melania Trump faced her own fashion firestorms. In 2018, she wore a jacket at the border that read, “I REALLY DON’T CARE. DO U?”
Melania later said it was a message to the media.
“I want to show them that I don’t care,” she told ABC News.
The difference? Melania stood firm. Michelle is still talking about it 16 years later.
Michelle and Barack have stayed mostly quiet during President Trump’s second term. But this podcast has people wondering: Is she trying to step back into the spotlight?
“She’s testing the waters,” said one GOP strategist. “And playing the victim is her brand.”
