Army Veteran, 28, Dies Suddenly After Crossing Finish Line at San Diego Veterans Day Marathon

A 28-year-old Army veteran who survived deployments in Syria and South Korea collapsed and died just moments after crossing the finish line of a Veterans Day half marathon — as his girlfriend watched in horror.

Scottie Williams, a California native and Army Reserve specialist, had just finished the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon in San Diego on Sunday when his heart suddenly stopped. Witnesses said the young veteran appeared perfectly healthy as he grabbed his finisher’s medal, smiled, and then fell to the ground.

“He grabbed his medal, started walking, and just collapsed out of nowhere,” his sister Sarah Young told reporters. “He was completely fine before that — no warning at all.”

Williams’ girlfriend, Bree Rivera, was at the finish line cheering him on when the tragedy unfolded. “He looked strong and happy,” she told the family afterward. “Then suddenly he was gone.”

Paramedics rushed in to perform CPR for more than 20 minutes, but Williams never regained a pulse. “They tried everything,” Young said tearfully. “His heart just wouldn’t come back.”

An autopsy was completed hours later, but the cause of death remains a mystery. The family says results may take months.

Williams enlisted in the Army just days after graduating from Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, California, in 2015. He served as a troop transport driver in both Syria and South Korea before joining the Army Reserve and later training as an electrician.

His sister described him as “the best version of himself” in recent months. “He went through dark times after leaving the Army — PTSD hit him hard,” she said. “But this year he came out the other side. He was happy, in love, and planning a future.”

Williams had moved to San Diego’s Ocean Beach, where he built a new life with Rivera. Friends say he loved the outdoors — snowboarding, surfing, and fishing whenever he could.

His mother, Katherine Yglesias-Herrera, often posted photos of her son in uniform with pride. His father, Michael Williams, had died only three months earlier. “Losing Scottie so soon after Dad — it’s unbearable,” said his older sister, Kimberly Huereque.

Huereque added that Williams was thriving in his trade career. “He loved being an electrician. He was always learning, always improving. He had so much life ahead of him.”

Earlier this year, Williams surprised his entire family with tickets to a Scotty McCreery concert for their mother’s birthday. “It was the first time we saw him truly at peace,” Sarah recalled. “He had found happiness again — it’s cruel that it ended like this.”

Rivera later posted a photo of the two at a music festival, writing that it was “the happiest we’ve ever been.” Williams’ family flooded the comments with love. “You were his person,” his mother wrote. “You made him happy again.”

Williams’ body was brought home to Ridgecrest on Thursday evening. Hundreds of friends and neighbors lined the streets waving American flags as his procession passed.

His family has raised over $20,000 for his funeral and memorial. “We can’t begin to understand how someone so full of life could be gone in an instant,” they wrote in a statement. “Scottie had so much left to live for.”

The Silver Strand Half Marathon, which benefits the Life Sports Foundation, released a statement mourning the fallen veteran:
“Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and fellow service members. We are profoundly grateful for his service and for being part of our running community.”

Army buddy Cornelius Johnson also paid tribute online, posting a photo of the two together in Korea: “You were the best of us, brother. Rest easy.”
