Vice President Kamala Harris and First Lady Jill Biden ended up sitting shoulder-to-shoulder Thursday at former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral — their first public appearance together since Harris released her explosive 2024 memoir, 107 Days.
Protocol determined the seating at Washington National Cathedral, placing the Bush family, the Bidens, and then Harris in the front row. Cameras quickly caught what looked like a tense moment. As Harris leaned over to greet President Biden — who turned 83 that day — Jill Biden appeared to purse her lips before saying something quietly to her husband.
According to lip reader Nicola Hickling, who spoke to the Daily Mail, Biden told Harris, “Nice to see you, Kamala.” The First Lady then reportedly added to Harris, “He wasn’t ignoring you.” Harris gestured back, saying she thought Biden would acknowledge her sooner but didn’t.
The exchange lasted only a few seconds — George W. and Laura Bush walked in moments later — but it immediately sparked conversation online.
Harris’ memoir, released in September, laid out her frustrations with the Bidens in detail. She described a tense encounter after Joe Biden’s disastrous July 2024 debate with Donald Trump, when Jill Biden allegedly confronted Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, at a White House Fourth of July event, asking, “Are you supporting us?” Harris wrote that the comment enraged Emhoff and intensified internal friction within the campaign.
Emhoff did not attend Cheney’s funeral, avoiding what could have been an even more uncomfortable reunion.
On Harris’ other side sat former Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen. Harris hugged Karen Pence and chatted warmly with Mike Pence before the service. She was also seen talking animatedly with former vice presidents Dan Quayle and Al Gore.
Cheney’s funeral brought together a rare bipartisan crowd. About a year before his death, Cheney made national news by endorsing Harris over Trump, saying Trump posed a “greater threat to our republic” than anyone in American history. His daughter, Liz Cheney, had already split with the GOP over Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
In a final, pointed message, the Cheney family did not invite Donald Trump or Vice President JD Vance.
Notable attendees included Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Jamie Raskin, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and Rachel Maddow. As is customary, all living former vice presidents were present.
The Obamas and the Clintons did not attend — neither former president served as vice president — but Joe Biden did, as expected, despite the chilly optics between his family and Harris.

I want to say “I’m shock” that Trump nor the Vice-President didn’t attend Cheney’s funeral, but I’m not because that’s who these people are: no sympathy, empathy, common sense, selfish, I have more, but I won’t mention them, others can fill in more. Sorry, I’m a Republican, but our country has changed in so many wrong ways that I and others no longer feel safe and proud of our United States of America
That is a Bunch of bull 💩Obamas & Biden messing the country up was ok with you Democrats, right!?
