Nancy Pelosi, the 85-year-old former Speaker of the House, is facing backlash yet again after doubling down on her now-infamous rant calling President Donald J. Trump “a vile creature” and “the worst thing on the face of the Earth.”
But according to Pelosi herself, those shocking remarks were mild.
“I said that as a euphemism,” Pelosi told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday. “I could have done much worse,” she added with a laugh.
The comments come just weeks after Pelosi announced she would not seek re-election in 2026 — effectively marking the end of her decades-long grip on Democratic power in Congress. But if anyone expected her to leave quietly, they were mistaken.
Pelosi first lobbed the verbal grenade earlier this month in an interview with CNN’s Elex Michaelson.
“He’s just a vile creature. The worst thing on the face of the Earth,” Pelosi said flatly.
Michaelson, surprised, asked her to clarify: “You think he’s the worst thing on the face of the Earth?”
“I do. Yeah, I do,” Pelosi replied.
Rather than walk it back, she doubled down when asked again during her final sit-down with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
In classic Pelosi fashion, the former Speaker offered an apocalyptic assessment of Trump’s presidency.
“He’s the president of the United States and he does not honor the Constitution,” Pelosi claimed. “He’s turned the Supreme Court into a rogue court. He’s abolished the House of Representatives. He’s chilled the press. He’s scared people who are in the country legally.”
Political observers have slammed Pelosi’s statements as both false and dangerous — especially given her past role as second-in-line to the presidency.
Pelosi’s critics say the comments reek of desperation and bitterness. With Trump now firmly back in the White House, and Republican approval surging among Hispanic and working-class voters, many on the Right see Pelosi’s remarks as out-of-touch elitism.
“This is exactly why Democrats are losing working Americans,” said Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL). “They’ve spent years calling Trump voters ‘deplorables’ and now this? It’s disgusting.”
When asked by Cooper if she had other insults she’d prefer to use, Pelosi deflected.
“No, no, I want to talk about my House… and how we’re going to win what’s there,” she said.
The Trump White House has so far remained quiet on Pelosi’s latest jab — but not for long. A screenshot circulating online shows the Trump campaign reposting a headline from Newsweek:
“Trump Launches Attack on Nancy Pelosi: Disgusting Degenerate.”
Sources close to the president say Pelosi’s repeated attacks are only fueling his base.
“She’s the best fundraiser Trump’s got,” joked a senior RNC strategist. “Every time she opens her mouth, our donations spike.”
Pelosi has been one of Trump’s most relentless critics since 2016. From tearing up his State of the Union speech on live TV to spearheading two impeachment efforts, her relationship with the president has been defined by venom and spectacle.
But with the Democratic Party fractured and struggling to maintain relevance in Trump’s second term, Pelosi’s last hurrah may be more of a political liability than an asset.
Even many Democrats were uneasy about her latest interview.
“There’s no upside to that kind of rhetoric,” said one former Obama adviser. “It just looks like personal hatred now.”
Nancy Pelosi isn’t done throwing punches — but in 2025, it looks like the American people have already moved on. President Trump remains in command, and Pelosi’s parting words may say more about her own bitterness than the man she can’t stop attacking.
