The small island, long known as a haven for the ultra-wealthy, saw chaos erupt Saturday afternoon when an unexpected brawl broke out in the middle of Federal Street—just as Santa Claus was making his grand arrival by boat.

Witnesses say the melee involved multiple men ranging in age from their 20s to their 60s, and was captured in videos now spreading rapidly across social media. A brawl broke out on Federal Street during the 51st Nantucket Christmas Stroll on Saturday, according to video obtained by the Current. Police responded to the scene and are still investigating, but as of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made. Witnesses said the people involved in the fracas declined to press charges. The incident occurred shortly after hundreds of people had gathered on Main Street to watch the arrival of Santa Claus. It was the only blemish on what was otherwise a successful and enjoyable Stroll weekend that brought thousands of visitors to the island.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said Shelby Wright, a Nantucket local who was out shopping when the fight broke out. “You had men in designer coats and scarves going at each other while kids stood there screaming, and Santa’s just waving like everything’s normal. Totally surreal.”

In one of the most viewed clips posted to X (formerly Twitter), two older men can be seen shoving each other while, nearby, a younger man tackles another person to the ground. Within seconds, multiple punches are thrown, and a crowd begins to form around the scuffle.

“It was like the Jets and Sharks in West Side Story—but dressed in Burberry,” one shocked tourist told Boston’s KISS108. “It was twenty-somethings versus sixty-somethings. Everyone looked like they were on their way to brunch, not a brawl.”

Nantucket Police confirmed they responded to the incident around 2 p.m. Saturday, but so far, no arrests have been made. Authorities say the cause of the fight is still under investigation and are reviewing video footage from multiple angles.

While no serious injuries have been reported, the event has left a stain on what was supposed to be a peaceful celebration in one of Massachusetts’ most idyllic destinations. Nantucket, historically a whaling village, has become a magnet for tech executives, media moguls, and political elites over the past few decades.
