A Central Indiana basketball game turned into a heartbreaking scene Friday night when beloved referee Jeff Tamarri — known across the region as “Jeff the Ref” — suddenly collapsed and died in front of stunned players, coaches, and fans. He was 63.
Witnesses say Tamarri had just turned to get into position after an offensive rebound during a girls’ high school game at Monrovia High School when he fell to the floor without warning. Gasps filled the gym as coaches yelled for help and referees frantically waved for medical assistance.
“It all happened so fast,” fellow official Kevin Brown told WTHR. “He just went down. I have no doubt everyone did everything they could — but it was clear it was serious from the start.”
Fans were quickly ushered out of the gym as bystanders with medical training rushed onto the court to perform CPR. Despite desperate efforts from first responders, Tamarri could not be revived.
“It was a simple offensive rebound in the middle of the second quarter,” Brown recalled. “He turned, took a step, and collapsed. It was like his body just shut down.”
Known affectionately as “Jeff the Ref,” Tamarri had officiated youth sports for more than 30 years — a fixture at games from Zionsville to Danville. Thousands of Indiana kids grew up seeing him on the sidelines, his whistle and smile becoming part of their childhood memories.
“He truly died doing what he loved,” Brown said. “He brought calm when things got heated. Everyone respected him — coaches, players, parents.”
In a gut-wrenching tribute posted online, fellow referee Derek Whitfield said Tamarri’s sudden passing “leaves an immense void in our hearts,” but also comfort in knowing he “left us pursuing his passion, surrounded by the game that defined him.”
“Jeff wasn’t just an official,” Whitfield added. “He was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light. His smile, his laughter — they were contagious.”
Referee Terry Taylor, Tamarri’s best friend and longtime roommate, said word of his death hit the community like a thunderclap. “Everywhere we went, people knew him. There were a lot of tears Saturday — a lot of kids asking why.”
In a cruel twist, Tamarri spent decades ensuring games ran smoothly and safely for others — only to lose his life on the same court he devoted his life to.
He will forever be remembered as “Jeff the Ref,” the man who turned youth sports into something more than a game.
