It was just past midnight last Thursday when East Greenwich police pulled over 51-year-old Maria Bucci — the chair of the Cranston Democratic Committee and a well-known figure in Rhode Island liberal circles — for suspected drunk driving. What happened next was caught on police bodycam and is sending shockwaves through the state’s Democratic establishment.
Bucci, a former Cranston city councilwoman who ran failed campaigns for mayor and state representative, repeatedly berated officers during the stop.
“You know who I am, right?” she snapped, attempting to leverage her political connections. When an officer calmly replied, “I don’t know who you are,” she cut him off — “You don’t care, right?”
Things went from bad to bizarre fast. Slurring her words, Bucci launched into a rambling rant, bizarrely dragging race into the situation.
“God forbid I was a Black person, I’d be arrested,” she yelled, even as police tried to administer a field sobriety test. In another clip, she added, “I feel bad for the people that are not in my position.”
The irony? She was arrested — and she’s white. Critics are now slamming the comment as race-baiting hypocrisy from a party that claims to fight for equality.
“She’s playing the victim card while intoxicated behind the wheel. It’s offensive to law-abiding Americans of every color,” said local Republican voter Mike L., who watched the video on GoLocalProv.
Bucci wasn’t done. While refusing to cooperate, she shouted to a family member nearby:
“Call my husband right now, and call the attorney general and everybody else in town!”
As officers tried to keep the situation under control, Bucci snapped again:
“You’re a d–k. Give me the camera. You’re a d–k… You’re a loser.”
Police noted she had severely bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, and was “spitting while yelling and extremely confrontational.”
At one point, she claimed she had only one glass of wine at a Christmas party. Police weren’t buying it — and now she’s facing a misdemeanor charge for DUI, first offense, with unknown blood alcohol content.
Bucci’s meltdown isn’t just personal — it’s political. She recently appeared in a December 3 Instagram post by Helena Buonanno Foulkes, the Democrat running for governor of Rhode Island in 2026.
“Such a great evening in Cranston!” Foulkes wrote, thanking Bucci for “bringing such wonderful people together.”
Neither Foulkes’ campaign nor the state Democratic Party responded to requests for comment.
As Democrats in Washington attempt to paint conservatives as the party of chaos, this latest scandal undercuts that narrative. Bucci, a seasoned political insider, invoked her connections, dismissed accountability, and weaponized identity politics — all while allegedly drunk behind the wheel.
With President Trump prioritizing law and order and holding public officials to account, the question now is: Will Rhode Island Democrats apply the same standard to their own?
So far, silence.
